Show Open letter Concern seen for people on welfare 1 The following letter is a copy of one sent recently by : Marvin Warren, Democratic candidate for the Senate, to the chairman of the Welfare Commission: Com-mission: Honorable Ward C. Holbrook, Chairman Public Welfare Commission State of Utah 421 State Capitol Salt Lake City, Utah 84114 Dear Mr. Holbrook: My constituents have expressed expres-sed concern to me as to the adequacy of housing in which our Utah old age pensioners and other welfare families are living. It is my understanding that at present your Commission Commis-sion has no records' of the housing hou-sing conditions of the old age pensioners and other welfare families. I would appreciate it very much if you would have your staff undertake an immediate review of the current housing of our welfare families, including includ-ing answers to the following questions. 1. Is the housing owned or rented by the welfare family? 2. Is the housing in a good or substantial condition? In this respect, I would suggest that you follow the same test as to the condition of the housing hou-sing used by the U. S. Census Bureau. In substance, I understand under-stand that housing is considered consider-ed to be substandard if it does not have modern inside heating and plumbing facilities, if the housing is structurally unsafe, or if the housing is seriously dilapidated. 3. If renter occupied, what is the monthly rental pay ment? What utilities if any, are included in the rental payment pay-ment such as water, electricity, gas for cooking, water heating, for example. 4. Is the housing adequate for the size of the family? Are there sufficient bedrooms to permit a separation of the sexes sex-es of older children? I would appreciate it very much if you could complete this study prior to the meeting of the next session of the legislature. leg-islature. If you have any questions ques-tions concerning this request, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. Very truly yours Marvin F. Warren House of Rep. |
