Show Redmen split games in classic By MIKE CANNON Sports Writer If the play of the Cedar High Redmen roundball team in the Dixie Colonel Classic is any indication, CHS fans could have quite a bit to holler about this season. The Kedmen lost a squeaker to 4-A power Ben Lomond 52-51 on Friday and then bounced back to whip Valley 55-45 in Saturday's battle for third and fourth place. "We were pleased with the way our kids played," explained CHS coach i John Nielson. "It's early in the season and we're going to get better." The Scots of Ben Lomond were playing their third game of the season while Cedar was playing their initial contest Friday. Ben Lomond jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead as Cedar struggled to figure out the object of the game, putting the sphere into the hole. The Reds finally figured things out and stormed back to tie the contest 14-14 at first quarter's end. "We came back and handled their pressure better," said Nielson. "All in collecting eight rebounds. David Leavitt added 14 tallies and 12 boards and Corry Nielsen chipped in with 11 points. "David Leavitt did a very good job on the boards," said Nielson. "We missed some easy shots that I think will fall as the season progresses." Cedar was 22-57 from the field for a 39 percent figure. ; On Saturday, balance was the name "of the game for Cedar. David Leavitt, Kevin Hunter and Robert Nakken each scored ten while Rick Lunt and Kevin ' Garrett added eight a piece to lead the I Reds to their ten-point victory. "We had good balance in that game," said Nielson. "That balance is good, that's what you need to be a solid basketball team. The kids played hard but not especially well." all we're pleased with the waythe kids played." In the second quarter, the Scots again pulled away to a 10-point halftime lead as their trapping pressure rattled the Redmen. The third quarter was fairly even, ending with the score 43-35 for Ben Lomond. Cedar played tremendous defense in the second half, limiting Ben Lomond to only three field goals. The Scots were 18-28 from the line while Cedar was 7-8 for the game. Cedar clawed back in the fourth period and led by one with :40 remaining. They lost the ball and Ben Lomond scored to make it 52-51. Cedar had a chance for one final shot but couldn't get a good one off and the game ended with the Redmen down by one.
