Show Three Casualties Added To County's List Pfc. Merrill F. Iaub and AVinferd Gifford Make The Supreme Sacrifice Washington county adds two killed and one wounded, to this week's honor roll. Pfc. Merrill F. Laub, of Enterprise, died of wounds received in action in the Pacific area; Winferd Gifford of LaVerkin was killed inaction, also in the Pacific area; and Pfc. Ray King of the U." S. Marine Corps is reported wounded. Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Gifford of LaVerkin were advised by wire from the War Department Friday, Nov. 10, that their son, Winferd Gifford, who was serving wth the U. S. Navy somewhere in the Pacific had boon killed in action recently. Details as to his location loca-tion and rating are withheld for the present. Born, Jan. 22, 1922 in Delta, Utah, he was a son of Cyrus and Ina Bundy Gifford. Since he was a young boy the family has lived in LaVerkin where he had bus early schooling. Later he graduated gradu-ated from Hurricane high school. From 1936 to 1942 he was cm-ployed cm-ployed by Emil J. Graff during summers and after school. Married In Lus Vegas In 1942 he accepted defense work in Las Vegas and on July 10, 1942 was married to Miss Annabelle Eves in Las Vegas. On Nov. 1, 1942, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was soon on active duty. His ship participated in the campaigns of North Africa, Sicily and other important locations. loca-tions. After his ship was damaged in the siege of the Marshalls, in Nov. 1943, he was able to come home on a short leave while the ship was in dry dock for repairs. The latest letter received from him was dated Oct. 21. In this he said he was happy that he enlisted and was glad ho was out there shooting dice with the boys in this effort to restore peace and when his time came, he wanted to die in action. He always urged his family not to worry. His father was with the signal corps of the aviation section in World War I. Surviving besides his wife and daughter, Diana, aged 17 months, of Las Vegas, are his parents of LaVerkin, four brothers, Pvt. Sheldon Gifford, in training willi the Air Forces at Lowry Field, Denver; Nathan Bernarr Gifford, S 2c serving in the South Pacific and Mclvin and Omar Gilford of LaVerkin, four sisters, Mrs. Beulah Pectol, Angie, LaVolla and Avoncll, all of LaVerkin. Ho also has a cousin, Garth Day, who was reared as a brother from infancy, who is a hospital attendant with the U. S. Memorial services have been tentatively set for Sunday, Nov.. 19, at 4 p. m. in the Zion Park stake chapel under direction of the American Legion, Stirling Russell Post No. 100. On Nov. 4, Mr. and Mrs. Milton F. Laub of Enterprise were advised ad-vised by wire from the War Department, De-partment, that their son, Pfc. Merrill L. Laub had died of wounds received in action in the Philippines invasion, Oct. 16. Pfc. . Laub was inducted Nov. 7, 1942. At the same time, his brother, Norman, enlisted, in the hope, that they might continue together, to-gether, which they have done. Both were fond of horses and were assigned to the cavalry, training first at Fort Riley, Kan., and later at Pittsburg, Calif. They went overseas in Sept. 1943. Both boys saw much action, and were among the 86 cavalry men who scored 350 Japs from 2 to 9 p. m., on one occasion. Norman has had six weeks of hospitalization for wounds. Born, Mar. 29, 1922 at Enterprise, Enter-prise, Pfc. Merril F. Laub was a son of Milton F. and Luella Bowler Laub. Besides his parents are four brothers, Pfc. Norman Laub with the U. S. cavalry; Steven, Ferron and Darrell, and two sisters, Ruby and LaRee Laub, all of Enterprise. Pfc. Ray S. King is a son of Mr. and. Mrs. Victor J. King of Hurricane, and is serving with the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve. Other details are lacking at this time. |
