Show EXPERT GIVES FRUITGROWERS NEWJUTLOOK Tells Farmers Low Cost to Producer Is More Important Impor-tant Than High Prices; Home Market Necessary The fruit men's convention held at Hurricane Friday and Saturday proved to be very successful suc-cessful and beneficial to more than 80 growers from the East part of the county who attended. attend-ed. Professor F. M. Coe, horticultural horti-cultural expert of the Utah agricultural agri-cultural college was the - principal prin-cipal speaker at the four meetings meet-ings and three demonstrations. He told the fruit men that even though our nation was greatly overplanted and was therefore overproducing fruit for the markets, mar-kets, the time is coming when this will be changed. He pointed out that the apple ap-ple cycle is about 20 years and the peach cycle about 10 years long. The farmer has only one way to beat the game, he said, and it will not be legislation, farm debentures or by federal appropriations. It can be done only by beating the average farmer in cost of production, and in securing higher yields per acre than the average farmer. far-mer. Farmers have been looking at higher prices for their products pro-ducts and not at lower costs of production. They have been wondering how much money they could get, and not how cheap they could produce it. Professor Coe emphasized the importance of supplying the local markets as well as becoming be-coming established on the Salt Lake market. He said we should take more interest in modern road side markets, and should by all means supply the parks trade. The outlook is not good for the man who has a poor orchard, orch-ard, and is a poor manager, but the' outlook is bright for the man with a high yielding orchard of a good variety of fruit, and who puts study and modern practices into his business. |
