The Utes will host the Vernal Tournament of Champions, Friday and Saturday at Uintah High School in Vernal. The Uintah Utes will host the annual Vernal Tournament of Champions, Friday and Saturday at Uintah High School in Vernal. The sessions on Friday will be held at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The consolation semi-finals will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. The consolation finals will begin at 6 p.m. and the championship finals are set for 7:30 p.m. Two defending state champions, Uintah and Rock Springs and two former state championship teams, Green River, Wyo., and Preston, Idaho, as well as Box Elder, second place team at the state meet two years in a row; Viewmont, sixth place; Skyline, Utah, tenth place and Mountain View of Orem, will compete in the Vernal Tournament of Champions. Last year Uintah edged Rock Springs by one point for the tournament title. Uintah's possible starters in the tournament are: 98-Brett Brown, 105-Mark 105-Mark Augusuts or Brent Morrill, 112-David 112-David Gentry, 119-Josh Reynolds, 126-Jeff 126-Jeff Good, 132-Darrin Bailey, 138-Allen Huber or Frank Atwood, 145-Pat Jenkins, 155-Randy Smuin, 167-Brent Hales, Jody Young or Russ Anderson; 185-Don Bohrer, Anderson or Roger Griffin and heavyweight, Griffin or David Weeks. "I expect a lot out of our wrestlers and they give a lot back. They are totally dedicated wrestlers. Jenkins, Bailey and Gentry have looked good as sophomores and they are improving with each dual meet and tournament. Griffin has come a long way. He is developing into a good 185 pounder and heavyweight. Young could challenge at 167 and Anderson has learned a lot of wrestling in two months. Russ can be a real help to our team in the heavier weights. He will challenge for the varsity team," stated Chuck Henry, Uintah's wrestling coach. Uintah has three wrestlers who placed in the 1980 Vernal Tournament of Champions. Brown placed first at 98 pounds and Reynolds, 98, and Smuin, 145, netted second places. Brown, Reynolds, "The best match that I have ever seen Reynolds wrestle was at the Rock Springs Tournaipent. He decisioned Gary Dallman of Green River, 7-2. Dallman is one of the best wrestlers Josh has faced. Smuin placed second in the Vernal Tournament last year when he was defeated in the last five seconds. His opponent scored some points in the final seconds to erase a lead by Smuin. Randy is in a class of his own in the 155 pound division, which is one of the toughest weight levels in high school. I expect a lot of pins out of Brown. He is constantly going for the fall. He is a pinner. Good is one of our most consistent con-sistent wrestlers. He stays in control and is a good wrestler," said Henry. Uintah captured the 1980 3-A state title in Utah and Rock Springs, Wyo., pocketed the 1980 state title in Wyoming. Green River, Wyoming, and Preston, Idaho, placed third. Box Elder netted second. "The favorites should be Uintah, Rock Springs and Green River and Preston and Box Elder should be the dark horses. Some of the outstanding out-standing wrestlers from Box Elder are: Stewart Richards, defending state champ, at 112; Brad Williams, 105; Jim Smoot, 98 and Chris Stanger, 115. The Utes have undefeated tusslers at 98, Brown; 119, Reynolds; 126, Good and 155-Smuin. Jenkins at 145 has only two losses and Bailey, 132, has three losses," said Henry. Henry added, "Viewmont has a good 98 pounder in Hanson and Green River is strong at 167 with John Mahaffey, Adam Stacy, 98; Henlop, 105; Dallman, 119; Robinson, 138; Hamel, 145 and Mike Beck, 155. Rock Springs' top matmen are: Gonzales, 112; Cookie . Hower, 126; Brian Ashmore, 167; Steve Shassetz, 185 and Stassinos, 105. Skyline has an outstanding tussler at 112 pounds in John Robbins. Robbins placed second to Steamboat's Norm Look, 112, in the 1980 Vernal Tournament Tour-nament of Champions. Orem was split into Mountain View and Orem High Schools this year. Chris Humphries, Mountain View, 132 or 138, is a good wrestler." Last year the most exciting match at the Vernal Tournament of Champions took place between Uintah's Matt Hacking and Ron Stassinos of Rock Springs. Hacking downed Stassinos in overtime due to a referees' decision. Another exciting match should be between Smuin of Uintah and Beck of Green River in the 155 pound class. "Beck and Smuin are extremely good wrestlers. I should be another barn burner. It will be the Stassinos-Hacking match of 1981," stated Henry.
