Show Camp May Ruple speaks on Utah's early history Camp May Ruple held their Janaury meeting at the home of Captain Lyla Bennion, with co-hostess Diedra Ellifritz, a new member, assisting her with the luncheon which was served to nine members and one guest, Mrs. Ruby Nelson, Captain Bennion's mother. Captain Bennion conducted. Wanda Staley gave a history of Tean-cum Tean-cum Pratt, son of Parley P. Pratt, who was Helper, Utah's first settler. Tean-cum Tean-cum wrote of many things in his diary. His father's death, his struggle as a young . i boyjl hisi .two wives and ' 22... children, experiences ;with the United c, Order Jiei recorded ,,e vents in settling, and homesteading in Helper in 1881, his prison term for polygamy and the $ sickness and deaths in his family. Also in his diary he recorded major events in the history of the Helper and Spring Glen settlements. He was born on Nov. 15, 1851, in Salt Lake City, married An- ; na Mead on Oct. 10, 1872, and Sarah Ewell on Oct. 25, 1875. His last entry on Jan. 19, 1900 was written eight months before his death. Pratt died in a coal mine accident Sept. 8, 1900. Marjorie Akelund gave the lesson on the diary of Samuel Openshaw who came from England in 1853 with his father, mother, and five brothers and sisters. They came to Salt Lake Valley with the fifth Handcart Company led by : Edward Martin. There were many ; deaths and much sickness; and survival sur-vival was a struggle. Their food was in such short, supply that many suffered from hunger. Winter set in ' before the i Openshaw party arrived in the Salt 1 Lake Valley so help was sent to them i and they were able to finish the trek. When traveling in Diamond Dia-mond Gulch Junction, you will cross trails ridden rid-den by notorious outlaw bands of the late 1800's such as: Matt Warner, Butch Cassidy, Elza Lay. These bad men as well as many more had cattle 'spreads' on Diamond Mountain during the outlaws era of time. "A liar must have a good memory." |
