FREESTONE'S TOBY GILROY rips into a pitch delivered by an Outsider pitcher for a base hit in a tournament game, Thursday. Young's PcainU1 mps Bcaller crew, 12-11 The Lamplighter Bailers were behind by seven runs going into the top of the seventh inning and after the game was over they were still behind, but by only one due to a 12 to 11 loss to Young's Paint in a battle between unbeaten teams Thursday in the Vernal Men's Softball Tournament. A 2-0 lead was gained by the Lamplighter Lam-plighter Bailers in the top of the first inning. Craig Monsen gained a fielder's choice with two outs and moved to second base on a single by Arvel Tassainer. Monsen scored on a wild throw into the dugout and Duane Merrell ripped the balj for a single to score Tassainer. However, the Bailers' lead was shortlived as Young's Paint scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4 to 2 lead. Monty Lee gained an inside the park homer and Kevin Huber smashed a double and scored on a single by Carlos Reed to tie up the game at 2-2. Kim Oliverson connected with a pitch by the Bailers for a two-run homer which gave the Young crew a 4-2 lead. The Bailers were blanked in the second and third innings, but Young's Paint hit the jackpot with two runs in the second and six in the third inning for a 12 to 2 lead. Frank Young led off with a single and Danny Long gained a homer to drive in Young and give the team a 6 to 2 lead. Kim Oliverson singled in the bottom of the third inning and Rick Gardner singled and knocked in Oliverson. Kent Bigelow singled and Young flied out. Gardner and Bigelow scored on a bad throw and Long gained a double. Monty Lee reached first base on an error and Long scored. Huber smashed a double to drive in Lee and Brad Denver knocked in Huber due to a double. The Lamplighter crew scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut Y'oung's lead to seven runs, 12 to 5. Arvel Tassainer ripped a pitch for a homer in the fourth and Gary Monsen got on base on a fielder's choice and double by Shawn King placed two runners on the bases. Craig Monsen ripped out a single to drive in Monsen and King. The big explosion for the Lam plighter Bailers took place in the top of the seventh inning. Wayne Reid singled and an error by the left fielder placed Ken Serre on first base. Ted Taylor was walked to load up the bases and Gary Monsen gained a single to drive in Reid. Shawn King connected for a double to knock in Serre and Taylor and Craig Monsen walked to load up the bases. Tassainer flied out, but Monsen scored on the sacrifice hit. Duane Merrell singled to drive in Shawn King and ' Craig Monsen to cut the Young lead to one run, 12 to 11, with one out. However, Dave King and Scott Kavanaugh flied out and Young's Paint won the game by the score of 12 to 11. Vernal's Lamplighter Bailers dropped into a game with the Outsiders to decide the opponent for Young's Paint in the championship game. The Bailers nipped the Outsiders 5 to 4. The Outsiders gained a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a run by Donny Paugh, but the Bailers gained a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on runs by Gary Monsen and Shawn King. The Bailers increased their lead to 4 to 1 with two runs by Wayne Reid and Scott Kavanaugh in the second inning. The Outsiders' Bill Pope scored a run in the top of the fourth to cut the Bailers' lead to two runs, 4 to 2, but the Bailers scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on a homer by Kavanaugh for a 5-2 advantage. ' Two runs were scored by the Outsider crew in the top of the seventh inning to nip the Bailer lead to 5 to 4. Lowell Aycock gained a homer and Rick Gun-scored Gun-scored a run. Smith's downed Salty Oaks, Outsiders Out-siders downed Salty Oaks, Ashton's downed Target Trucking, Tosco toppled top-pled Nowsco, Lamplighter toppled D & G, Freestone thumped Valley Rookies, Hospital downed Twin Cinema, Diggers downed Mountain States, Wilkins downed Western Company and Young's Paint downed Wilkins 16 to 8 in first round games. Ashton's edged the Outsiders, 14 to 13; Lamplighter nipped Tosco, 12-11; Freestone pounded Hospital, 18 to 5 and Young's Paint downed the Diggers, 9-6.
