A JOURNEY to the hoop is taken by Union's Lonnie Sammaripa as he competes in a Cougar practice. The Cougars will host Moab, Friday. Moab was Union's first hoop victim in the 1980-81 season and the Union Cougars are hoping the school from Grand County will be the Cats first victim vic-tim in the 1981-82 season as they host Moab, Friday at 7:30 p.m. Last year Union nipped Moab in an away game, 55-52. Returning eager, Greg Bellon scored 13 points in the game for Union on two field goals and a 9 for 13 performance perfor-mance from the free throw lane. Another returning player, Cory Dye, scored five points. Union will battle Uintah in Vernal, November 27. Union hoopsters coming back from last year are: Cory Dye, 5'11" senior guard; James -White, 6'4" junior center; Bryan Snow, 6'4" senior center; Lonnie Sammaripa, 5'10" junior guard; Greg Bellon, 6'0" senior forward; Rick Nielsen, 6'0" junior for ward ; Mike Dastrup, 5'7" junior guard ; Grant Cook, 5'10" junior guard and Shane Nielsen, 5'10" junior guard. Also a member of the team is 6'3" junior forward, for-ward, Doug Allen, who is a transfer from Uintah High School. Allen was a member of the Uintah sophomore team last year. Some sophomores, who have been looking pretty good, according to Union coach, Brad Monks, are: 5'5" guard Mike Ross, 6'1" forward Stan Winward, 5'7" guard Wayne Gingell, 5'7" guard Brian Eldredge, 6'0" forward for-ward Ronnie Mortensen, 5'10" guard-forward guard-forward Chad Richard and 6'1" center-forward center-forward Scott Wilson. Some of the juniors listed were members of the Union sophomore team last year. "We are going to have a good year. Our athletes have a super attitude. We will use the fast break and a full court defense. Our team has more speed and better height. Our rebounding hurt us last year due to lack of size. This year we have more size and experience and we hope to improve our rebounding," -stated Monks. Monks added, "Our team will be young as we are carrying only five seniors. We have a good solid group of sophomores and juniors. We are going to use our preseason games to work on our basic game plan, finalize it and work on cutting down on mistakes." "Bryan Snow is a good rebounder and he works real hard. James White has developed into a fine offensive player who is looking to the basket to score. James needs to get more aggressive and become more physical on the boards. One of the two will be starting at center. Bryan is a more physical player due to weighing more than White," remarked Monks. "Lonnie Sammaripa is a good all around ball player. He loves to run and shoot with the ball and has a lot of talent, but he needs to work on his defense. Cory Dye has more experience than Sammaripa because he started a number of games .last year. He is a smart ball player and is a good defensive player and handles the ball well. He also shoots well and likes to move with the ball." Greg Bellon didn't start for the Cougars last year, but he gained a lot of playing time. Bellon hit a number of crucial free throws in a number of games and connected on some field goals. "Doug Allen has been playing real hard and he will be an asset to our team if we can keep him healthy. Allen has been having some minor problems with his ankle. Lynn Johnson is a good shooter and is more aggressive on defense this year. Dean Townsend is our power man. He's our Sherman tank. He's Improved more th else in the past two year8 oae excellent defense JSSJJJ Nelson needs to gain confin ' ' after a few games undVSfc see a much improved player" ' Union will battle Alt.- ' ' November 28 and will com ' m ; Basin Tournament, J)JSg - V : M k y i ' j f ' n i1 .. . f ' THE COUGARS' Cory Dye stages t a battle with a teammate. 3 |
