The Mites defeated the Dinos, 36 to 16. tfTOSsmfl wddh for C3iinms Quinn Downard scored only four points in the game for the Rams, but his third and fourth counters were the most important points of the ball game as he fired in a field goal with 20 seconds left to deliver a 28 to 26 victory over the Bugs to the Rams, Thursday evening in Bantam League action. The Rams' Scott Merkley produced a 2-0 2-0 lead when he put in a field goal, but Manuel Sisneros fired in a two-pointer to tie up the game at 2-2 early in the first quarter. Merkley returned a two-point two-point lead to the Rams when he connected con-nected on a field goal try, but Shane Atkinson tied the game up at 4-4 with a two-pointer. Once again Merkley tossed in a field goal. However, a shot by Manuel Sisneros dropped in to tie the game up at 6-6 after one quarter of action. Three field goals by Da vid Gurr and a two-pointer by Manuel Sisneros gave the Bugs a 14 to 10 lead at the end of the second quarter. Quinn Downard and Scott Merkley scored field goals for the Rams in the second quarter. Manuel Sisneros nabbed a rebound and put the ball in for a 16 to 10 Bug lead early in the third quarter, but the Rams' Scott Merkley terrorized the hoop with nine straight points for a 19 to 16 lead. Merkley put in a free throw for a one-point lead and a few seconds later fired in a field goal for a 19 to 16 Ram advantage. However, the Bugs overcame over-came the three-point Ram lead as David Gurr struck for two field goals and Manuel Sisneros popped in a two-pointer two-pointer for a 22 to 19 Bug lead after three quarters of action. The Rams' Richard Rust flipped in a field goal to cut the Bugs' lead to one point, but a field goal by David Gurr gave the Bugs' a 24 to 21 advantage. A field goal by Robert Rhodes and a free throw by Richard Rust tied the game up at 24-24. The Rams broke the tie when Scott Merkley pumped in a field goal for a 26 to 24 lead. However, a shot by Manual Sisneros tied the game up at 26-26, and then the Rams stole the ball and Quinn Downard fired in the win- to remain in second place in the Bantam League at 6-1. The Hawks toppled the Knats in the first game in the National Guard Armory Ar-mory by the score of 37 to 6. Vernal's Hawks jumped out to a 9 to 2 lead in the first quarter and blanked the Knats, 8-0, 8-0, in the second quarter for a 17 to 2 advantage. Mike Lance scored six points in the second quarter. The Hawks fired in 16 points in the third quarter for a 33 to 4 lead. Lance scored six points and Alec Clark put in five counters. The final score was Hawks, 37 and Knats, 6. Mike Lance was the top scorer in the game with 19 points on nine field goals and one free throw. Also scoring counters for the Hawks were Alec Clark, 9; Brant Ruesink, 3; Robert Giese, 2; Corwyn Taylor, 2 and David Merino, 2. Chad Bulland, Shane Merkley and Ryan Remington put in two points each for the Knats. The Mites' Darren Wilde put in the first six points of the game with the Dinos for a 6-0 lead and Cass Cook tossed in a two-pointer for the Dinos to make the score at the end of the first quarter, Mites, 6 and Dinos, 2. Derick Adams, Mark Hacking and Valton Mortensen fired in field goals to give the Mites a 13 to 4 lead at the end of the second quarter. The score at the end of the third quarter was Mites, 21 and Dinos, 10. The final score was Mites, 36 and Dinos, 16. Darren Wilde was the top scorer for the Mites with ten points. Also scoring counters for the Mites were Valton Mortensen, 9; Derick Adams, 9; Mark Hacking, 4; Darin Merrell, 2 and Scth Norwood, 2. Scoring points for the Dinos were Karl Slade, 5; KamPope, 4; Corey Clark, 4 and Cass Cook, 3. The standings after seven weeks of action in the Bantam League are: Hawks, first, 7-0; Mites, second, 6-1; Knats, Bugs, Rams, Dinos, third, 2-5. Games set for Saturday are: Mites vs Hawks, 1 p.m.; Rams vs Dinos, 2:15 p.m. and Bugs vs Knats, 3:30 p.m. Contests scheduled for Thursday, April 17 are: Rams vs Knats, 6 p.m.; Dinos vs Hawks, 7: 15 p.m. and Bugs vs Mites, 8:30 p.m. Games were changed from Thursday to Saturday, April 12 due to the National Guard Armory's Open House. Uintah to host Bulldogs The Uintah Ute baseball team will host the Judge Memorial Bulldogs, Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Region Seven action. Members of the Uintah Ute baseball team are: Rod Anderson, Burke Buckalew, Rate Johnston, Brent Labrum, Paul Merrell, Robert Shaw, Marty McCarrel, Raymond Perry, Wesley Clements, Clark McClellan, David McLean, Billy Bedell, Wayne Jenkins, Mike Leishman, Mike Workman, Work-man, Mark Robb, Rick Robbins, Jeff Good, Mike Reynolds, Mike Johnson, Bobby Caldwell, Kevin Rhodes, Greg Limb and Randy McNamara. The coach of the team is Kevin Khoury and the assistant coach is Monty Lee. The Utes have a 1-0 record in varsity baseball action. Uintah nipped Union in Roosevelt on March 20 by the score of 3 to 2. |
