Show Wilderness study areas proposed by Vernal BLAA The Bureau of Land Management's wilderness inventory in the Vernal District, has reached another major milestone. The field work and the recommendations for the second phase, called the intensive inventory, have been completed. In summary, the BLM is proposing five units of 15,650 acres be included in wilderness study areas. This recommendation recom-mendation is a result of reviewing 1.4 million'acres of public lands. Areas selected include: Cold Springs, 3,200 acres; Diamond Breaks, 3,900 acres; Bull Canyon, 520 acres, located in both Utah and Colorado; and Moonshine Draw, 3,000 acres; Daniels canyon, 5,030 acres, are located in Utah only. BLM teams devoted last summer and fall to critically evaluating the units. In some cases, the public participated directly in the field work. Persons are encouraged to review and comment on the wilderness study. A 90 day public comment period is being held from April 1 to June 30. An open house will be held at the BLM, Vernal District Office on May 22, 1 p.m. . to 8 p.m. The BLM recognizes that the criteria in the inventory process calls for judgements that can be highly subjective. sub-jective. Lloyd Ferguson, District Manager, desires to conduct the inventory with the broadest opportunity op-portunity for input from all concerned in order to arrive at a sound decision. Therefore the public is encouraged to contact the BLM office for further information and public comment forms. |
