Show JY by Corey W. Grua Public Info Chairman, I Uintah Co. Unit Amst. Cancer Socr 20 Year Cancer Prevention Study QUESTION: What are the results of the 20 year cancer prevention study? ANSWER: In 1959, Dr. E. Cuyler Hammond, launched the study and called call-ed it "the largest human biological study ever undertaken of life and death". ACS volunteers were asked to enlist more than one million Americans over age 30, to learn through detailed questionaires how their personal living styles, habits and environments influenced in-fluenced their health and longevity. Last year the study was concluded. What did we learn? Here are some findings: Low. tarnicotine cigarettes are relatively less hazardous than high tar brands. They are not "safe". Women overweight by 40 percent had higher rates of cancer of the uterus and ovaries. Men overweight 40 percent had higher risks of colon-rectum and prostate cancer. Men and women reporting seven hours of sleep had lower death rates from coronary heart disease and stroke than those sleeping more or fewer hours; those reporting less than five hours sleep per night had very high death rates. Men who said they got no exercise had higher coronary heart disease death rates than those reporting that they exercised, even lightly. There are several other interesting findings in this ACS sponsored research. resear-ch. We'll discuss them next week. If you are contacted this week by a Cancer Society volunteer, you might thank them for the time they are giving in your behalf, and be as generous as you can. Kenee Shiner, our crusade chair, said to think of your contribution as a loan that may someday pay you or someone you love big dividends. |
