Show Excused school absences can be made up The State Board of Education has approved a policy wherein students can be counted in attendance if they are unavoidably absent and make up the work by doing homework. The policy states: It is the philosophy of the State Board of Education that students should have the opportunity to make up school work when they are unavoidably absent. It is also the philosophy of the State Board of Education that as long as students are under the supervision of the school in the educational activities in which they are engaged and consistent with other state standards, this supervised mak6 up work qualify for financing. Thus, school districts should be allowed to claim weighted pupil units for students that are home and do not attend at-tend school because of illness or other unavoidable reasons but who make up their work. It is the intent of the State Board of Education that the quality of the make up work and the learning associated with it for such students be comparable to that of regular classroom instruction. Unavoidable absence: An absence because of sickness, death in the family, doctor and dental appointments and emergencies as defined by the " district. The Uintah School District policy states: Excused absences will be honored for personal illness or death in the immediate im-mediate family. Excused absences may be honored for illness in the family where the child is needed to assist in the home, family trips of an educational nature involving the immediate family, work where the student is needed to assist in harvesting crops or in doing other necessary work for the immediate im-mediate family. All excused absences carry with them the necessity of "make up" work. Such work shall be equal to the work assigned in each class for the period missed by the pupil. It is the obligation of the teacher to assign to the student, and require of him, work missed in the class. The school may require a written statement from home as a requisite to admission following absence. In cases where illness prevents a child from attending school, the parents may petition the principal for special considerations. con-siderations. The school must notify the parents periodically of all absences accumulated bv the student; i.e. report card, letter, telephone, etc. The school should make spot checks to the home regarding absences. |
