The 2-A Trojans nipped Union at Morgan, 15-13. Union will battle South Sevier, Friday at 1 p.m. in the 2-A State Tournament. Massed! tfEeSd goal prevents upsetf bid! Uintah High School's neighbor in Roosevelt, Union High School, came close to upsetting the number one ranked, Morgan Trojans, in a contest in Morgan, Friday, ns they had a lead of 13 to 8 at the end of the third quarter, but the Trojans edged out a 15 to 13 win due to a touchdown with about 4 minutes left in the game. A win by Union would have put the region in a three way tie for first place between Union, Morgan and Lehi. The Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Tracy Neilsen connected with Kary Kldredge on a 28 yard pass play and limit Fenn converted the extra point kick in the second quarter. The Cougars stopped the Trojans on the one yard line, and took a 7-0 lead into the lockerroom at halftime. A one-yard run by Marcel Archuleta and a 2-point conversion aerial from Roger Randall to Dana Russell gave the Morgan Trojans an 8-7 lead with 4:22 left in the third quarter. Morgan's lead only lasted ten seconds as Tracy Neilsen delivered a pass to Troy May for a G8-yard touchdown, touch-down, which gave the Cougars a 13 to 8 lead with 4:12 left in the third quarter, the aerial for the two-point conversion was no good. The Cougars almost had Randall sacked for a huge loss, but the Morgan quarterback got off an aerial before he was dropped. Pass interference was called on Union and the Trojans advanced ad-vanced to the 11 yard line. If the penalty hadn't been called Morgan would have encountered a fourth down and 22 situation. Morgan's Dave Buck blasted 11 yards up the middle for the six-pointer six-pointer and a successful extra point kick by Dave Durrant delivered a 15 to 13 lead to the Trojans with 4 minutes left in the game. However, the Cougars weren't ready to roll over and die as Tracy Neilsen fired a pass to Kary Eldredge at the 50 yard line and Troy May picked up a fumble by Kldredge and jetted to the 20 yard line. Union advanced to the ten yard line for a first down on the ten yard line. The Cougars attempted three pusses, but the aerials were incomplete. The Cougars had a chance to win the ball game by one point, but a 20 yard field goal try by Brent Fenn was short with 20 seconds left and Morgan won the game, 15 to 13. "We attempted three passes because we were running short on time and we didn't have any timeouts left. We almost connected on our second pass and our third aerial was almost in- terccpted," stated Union coach, Jay Omer. Union used up two timeouts when they called timeout as they were going for a first down on a fourth down play. The referee didn't call Morgan for encroachment so Union called timeout so that they could punt the ball. Omer added, "It was our finest ball game all year. Morgan is a good fixitball team. They do so many things that they are hard to stop offensively. Our passing looked really good. Overall we thought we played a good football game. Tracy Neilsen had his finest game. He passed well and intercepted a pass. Our entire team played well. We are hoping we are peaking about the right time." The Cougars will take on South Sevier at Monroe,. Friday at 1 p.m. in the 2-A State Tournament. South Sevier placed second in Region Eight at 7-2. The Rams have outscored their opponents, 250 to 93. They have suffered fosses to Uintah, 28 to 0, Orem's junior varsity, Ichi and Morgan. "South' Sevier is big and they throw the ball like Morgan does. They throw the ball about 00 to 70 percent of the time. Their line averages a little over 200 pounds," stated Jay Omer. "Morgan played as well as they could to beat us. We would like to get another shot at Morgan." Morgan will be in the same bracket as Union. Morgan will battle North Sanpete. San Juan will battle Millard and Delta will take on Lehi.
