The 4-4 record by the Utes is the best mark since the Utes thumped Rangley, East Carbon, Moab, Cyprus, Rock Springs and lost to Union, twice and tied Craig for a 5-2-1 record in 1965. Utfe sophomore veorim neabs second pleace Uintah High School's sophomore football team finished the season in a second place tie with Murray and Cyprus at 3-2 in Region Seven. The Utes posted an overall record of 5 wins and 3 losses. Judge Memorial placed first in the sophomore division in Region seven at 5-0. The Utes blanked Green River, Wyoming, 32 to 0; Union, 37 to 0 and Tooele, 20 to 0. Uintah nipped Cyprus, 28 to 26 and blasted Jordan, 60 to 28. The Utes suffered close losses to Judge Memorial, 14 to 12; Murray, 14 to 6 and to Altamont's varsity, 18 to 8. "Our game against Cyprus was one of our better contests. Cyprus is a good sophomore team. We scored our most points in the season against Jordan at 60-28," stated Uintah sophomore coach, Chuck Henry. "We really should have won that game with Judge Memorial. We had a touchdown taken away from us because we were called for blocking below the waist on a running play. The only time a team can be called for blocking below the waist is on a punting or kickoff situation. The touchdown we had taken away from us was scored on an end sweep, and actually we could have won that ball game." Henry added, "We were without Rick Morton in the Uintah game against Altamont's varsity and he played only one quarter in the loss to Murray. Our team looked good in the games against Green River, Union and Tooele. They shutout all three of the teams. Cyprus was probably our best game because of the tightness of the score." "Our sophomore team is a good bunch of football players," said Chuck Henry. "If they stick together they have a good chance of having a good varsity team in the next couple of years." Some outstanding players on offense and defense this year according to Chuck Henry were: offense, Rick Morton, tailback; Randy Smuin, fullback; Jeff Good, quarterback; Gary Galley, wingback; Greg Limb, running back; Mike Johnson, split end; David Juarez, tight end; Clark Adams, Guy Childs, center; Daniel Troester, guard; Don Gragert, tackle; Kris Oaks, guard; Mark Gamble, tackle; defense, Randy Smuin, Rick Morton, Jeff Good, Gary Galley, Mike Johnson, Greg Limb, Rex Potter, Mike Reynolds, Bobby Caldwell, Guy Childs, Don Gragert, Daniel Troester, Bob Lee, David Juarez and Paul Hacking. |
