Show USU Extension leaders attend annual training Five adult leaders recently going to I,ogan from L'intah County heard Extension authorities stress that both the family and the school have vital roles in helping individuals reach their full potential. Those attending were: " Mane Wardlc. Nola Kendall, Marydith White. Vadras Wall and Honda Olsen, Extension Home Economist. The annual Adult Leaders School at I'tah State I'niversity drew some 200 leaders from 27 counties over the state. The theme focus was "Expanding Your Potential." Dr. Brent Miller, assistant professor of family and human development, I'SU. stressed that the family's role is to foster a sense of safety, security, love and Ix'longing. For all ages the family must serve as a "societal shock absorber" in the present impersonal, changing world. It must be the place where children and adults can find refuge and have a feeling of belonging from persons who are significant to them. Dr. Walter Talbot, superintendent of public instruction for Utah, stated. "Most people marry and most have children. Therefore becoming a parent or being a member of a family is the most common experience that school graduates will have. It is basic that they receive help in the schools and elsewhere so that when they take that next step in life, it will be a satisfying step." He explained that the importance of this was recognized by the State Legislature in passing a law requiring all secondary schools to provide a course in preparation for family that students could have opportunity to take. He urged the leaders to check w ith their children and w ith their local schools to see that what they want taught is being taught in the schools in preparing their young people for that phase of their lives. The leaders had opportunities to learn many things about parenting, housing, money management, food dehydration, buying clothing and other topics of interest and concern.
