Show Fores? Service Will Proceed With M&jf Dlitn. Ctaf M . During the week of November No-vember 5, 1973,apinyon-juniper 1973,apinyon-juniper chaining project covering over 1,000 acres will be started on the Moab District, Manti- LaSal National Forest. This project is part of the range development program being undertaken under-taken on this District. The chaining areas, located lo-cated on Slaughter Flats, Dorry Canyon, and Am-asas Am-asas Back will improve critical deer winter range and increase forage for cattle using this area. The areas to be chained have little ground cover, produce negligible amounts am-ounts of grass and browse and consequently are susceptible sus-ceptible to overland flow of water and soil erosion. The revegetation of the chaining areas benefits many resources. The chaining areas have been laid out to blend into the background area and to provide maximum edge effect and cover for wildlife and livestock. Fences and water developments de-velopments will be con- structed as part of the range development program pro-gram to provide for intensive in-tensive management of livestock. A unique feature of this chaining project will be the study conducted by archaeologists ar-chaeologists to determine the effect of chaining on above-ground hunting and food gathering sites where artifacts are present. pre-sent. This study will be conducted on Slaughter Flats. The other areas to be chained have already been worked by archaeologists archae-ologists and the important impor-tant artifacts retrieved. There are many acres of archeological areas similar si-milar to that found on Slaughter Flats which are not included in the chaining chai-ning project. This area will be closed to livestock use for three years, giving time for the grass and forbs to become established. Vehicle Ve-hicle users of thee areas are encouraged to stay on established roads to protect pro-tect the seeding and pre- ' vent erosion patterns H 11 tional Forest T jh, a" 1 State of Utah.8 n e ' |
