A total of ton candidates candi-dates are busy this week contacting voters and prosontin g their platform plat-form statements (complete (com-plete list on Page A2 of this issue) as the deadline dead-line for making their contacts rapidly approaches. ap-proaches. Most interest centers around the race for Mayor May-or whore incumbent two-term two-term Mayor Winford Bunco is being challenged challeng-ed from four directions. Mayor Hunce, who initiated init-iated the "full-time Mayor" Ma-yor" organizational plan eight years ago when first elected, is campaigning cam-paigning on his record in office and the accomplishments accom-plishments made hero during the past eight years. Ho faces challenges from: William 1). Mc-Dougald, Mc-Dougald, veteran City Councilman now serving in his fourth term on the Council. Mr. Mc-Dougald Mc-Dougald is an independent indepen-dent geologist; J. C. (Curl) Robertson, recently rec-ently retired service station operator and former for-mer president of the Grand County Board of Education; Tom Stocks, public accountant and former City Councilman; and Steven Winchell, a self-sly led "hippie" who has promised to cut his hair if elected. In the race for the two City Council seats, one incumbent J. Kay-Hawks, Kay-Hawks, administrator of Allen Memorial Hospital Hospi-tal is facing three other candidates. They are Ivan "Sug" Bailey, owner of Custom Craft in Moab; James G. Chmielow ski. inhalation therapist at Allen Memorial Mem-orial Hospital; Keith W. Peterson, owner of Peterson Pet-erson Ford in Moab and President of the Moab Chamber of Commerce; and Gerald M. Bonser, owner and operator of the Apache Motel, and County Travel Council.' Because of the large number of candidates in the race, and the active campaigns, it is expected expect-ed that voter turnout next Tuesday will possibly set a record for Municipal Elections here. Usually, only a few over a thousand thous-and voters determine the outcome in City elections elec-tions here. Voters will be allowed to vote for one candidate for Mayor and cast two votes for City Council races. Polling places are: Precincts No. 1 and 2: Citv Office lobby. Precinct No. 3: Holiday Hol-iday Haven office. Precinct No. 4: Helen Hel-en M. Knight School (on the stage). Precinct No. 5: Southeast South-east Elementary School. The polls will close promptly at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night. |
