Show ftrl A It's Your Wildlife f JyLyi i By Garth Carter ! The 1977 fishing season is underway. Again the Colorado Colo-rado River will be open year around. The channel catfish limit is 24 fish except in Utah Lake and Willard Bay where the limit is 16 fish. Set lines may be used day or night on the Colorado River. Set lines are defined as an unattended line anchored at one end to a nonmoving object and not attached to a pole. Conventional angling with one pole is permitted concurrent with set line fishing. fish-ing. No more than two (2) set lines per angler may be used and they shall not contain more than thirty (30) hooks in the aggregate. Before wetting for lines check the new Aquatic Aqua-tic Wildlife Proclamation, -gkc- Bear Lake is open to the dip netting of Bonneville' Cisco from January 1 through February Feb-ruary 15. Dip nets shall not have an opening greater than 18 inches in any dimensions. The limit of Cisco is fifty (50). The Bonneville Cisco is found nowhere else in the world, it is about 8 inches long and resembles a herring in appearance. The Bonneville Cisco spawn starts early January Jan-uary in two to five feet of water, this is the time to dip for the herring-like fish. To dip for Cisco means fighting the cold water (generally 36-39 36-39 degrees F) and adverse 'weather of northern Utah. If you would like to try it or watch others, I suggest you call the Division of Wildlife Resources in Ogden (392-6001) (392-6001) to make sure the spawn is on, good luck. -gkc- Desert Lake Waterfowl Management Area may be a key asset to us in the near future. Desert Lake Waterfowl Water-fowl Management Area is a 2,600-acre unit that began its development in 1969. The project was constructed under un-der the Colorado River Storage Stor-age Act. . The series of hunting units were constructed by building dikes and water-flow systems in an area fed by sump water and irrigation overflow. Six hunting units have been constructed. con-structed. Only the Desert Lake unit is closed to hunting. Geese have been transplanted transplan-ted during the last five years in an attempt to establish a population at Desert Lake. Geese from Desert Lake have been seen in California's Imperial Im-perial Valley, in Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming. No goose hunting is available at present to allow the population popula-tion to grow and stabilize. All areas are accessible by foot and most hunting is done over decoys. There are five parking areas along the main gravel road. Early season harvests are typically made up of teal, gadwall, and bald-pates bald-pates with later season harvests har-vests being primarily mallards mall-ards with some ringnecks, goldeneye, redheads and cans". Desert Lake can be reached fill by Highway 10, north of ' Huntington, to Elmo and then by following the Dinosaur Quarry road to the manage- fi ment area. Next waterfowl season I 1 hope to obtain hunting re- -ports from Brent Hutchings, 'J Desert Lakes, Waterfowl -i Management Area Superin- tendent, to advise local avid hunters of conditions. Due to l the mild weather, waterfowl t hunting never reached a good condition this year. L -'- . i Kirk Mullins the conserva- if tion officer at Lake Powell F called Saturday night report- ing the fishing condition at the an; Powell. Fishing is poor for all species; fishing isn't expected to pickup until March. -gkc- The Natural Resources ' Seminars at the College of Eastern Utah, Room 123 of the Science Building, begin this Thursday, January 6, at 7:30 p.m. The first seminar is 1 Habitat, the Key to the Fu- PI 1 ture of Wildlife, delivered by 5 John Kimball, a professional J game manager. k -gkc- Many recipes are tried and then forgotten.
