Show Moab's Oldest Citizen Claimed by Death Moab's celebrated 101-year old. Bertha Blanche Murphy, died on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1977 at 5:45 p.m. at Allen Memorial Hospital. Born March 4, 1875 in Denver, Colo., to William and Mary Effie Phelps Hunter, she married Miles Edward Elmer, a railroad engineer for D&RGW, in Cheyenne, Wyo. He died May 2, 1908. She married Amber Jack Murphy May 24, 1937 in Salt Lake City. He was a miner, farmer and construction worker, and he died July 11, 1942. Mrs. Murphy lived in FarTnington and Aztec, N.M., and in Cortez and Nucla, Colo., where she ran a hotel. A highlight in her life was being named a Gold Star Mother. Ten i years ago she became a resident of Mesa Manor in Grand Junction, and two years ago she came to Moab to be closer to family, and was an1, extended care patient at the hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Otho Roland (Blanche) Murphy, Moab; a son, Tom Trimble Elmer, 8 grandchildren, grandchild-ren, Mrs. Penny Anderson, Austin, Tex., Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Lammert, Mrs. James (Betty) Lammert, Mrs. Tom (Shelton) Johnson, and Roland Murphy, all of Moab, Dale Elmer, Norwood, Colo., Mrs. June Sampson, Kamas, Wn., and Don Elmer; 30 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. Two sons preceded her in death. Services were held Tuesday in the LDS Chapel with Bishop Edward Johnson John-son officiating. Interment was in Grand Valley Cemetery under the direction of Grand Valley Mortuary. v - Bertha Murphy |
