Show Ch&mher Members If ice Concern The Moab Chamber of Commerce Com-merce held its first meeting of the year Tuesday, with newly elected President Ron Auger presiding. The first order of business for the"day Was a discussion about the dirty streets, and major "eyesores" within the City limits. It was brought out in an active discussion that people coming to Moab for the first time are quite impressed by the natural beauty of the countryside, but once they take a closer look at some of the streets and dwellings, including some businesses, they see not-so-beautiful man-made man-made litter, clutter and gar-' bage. No real solution was determined deter-mined as to how to alleviate the problem. However, some suggestions were offered, including in-cluding taking pictures of some of the most flagrant violators and have them published pub-lished in the newspaper. Another suggestion was to use the opposite approach, and have some of the most well-kept homes and businesses business-es as the focal point. It was also brought out that a neglected neg-lected piece of property that is an "eyesore" to the general public is against the law, and that the violators are subject to prosecution. City Councilman Keith pet-erson pet-erson was the guest speaker at the weekly luncheon, addressing add-ressing the chamber on the subject of City Council accomplishments accom-plishments for 1976, and their goals for 1977. Among the accomplishments of 1976 listed list-ed was that the city had purchased two more wells to help prevent future water shortages for the next two to four years. The hiring of David Bretzke as a full time City Administrator was also given as a high point. "Last, but not least," Mr. Peterson said, "fiscal year 1976 ended with a surplus without taxes being raised, and certainly with so many cities operating 'in the red,' it was a major accomplishment. Turning to the goals set for 1977, water problems dom-, dom-, inated. Sand in the water is a problem that the council has taken steps to alleviate, by the purchase of a $40,000 de-sanding device that will be installed in the water tanks. Getting rid of the impacted sand in the water line is a problem the council will try to come to grips with. Mr. Peterson Peter-son estimated that Vs of the water line is impacted by sand, thereby reducing the full capacity of the line. Getting the Mill Creek project proj-ect underway so that Moab will have the water it will need for its expected 20-year growth, is a priority for the council this year. He urged that everyone should support the proposed Community Center Cen-ter 100 because it will benefit everyone from "5 to 85." |
