Show Glen Canyon Visitors ng Down Last Month Visitors to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area totaled tot-aled 19,269 during January of this year, according to figures released by National Park Service. This represents a 32 percent decrease compared to 28,203 January visitors in 1975. Four areas showed increases: in-creases: Bullfrog, 1,217 in 1976 over 852 in 1975, up 43 percent; Halls Crossing, 1,507 in 1976 over 576 in 1975, up 335 percent; Hite, 288 in 1976 over 91 in 1975, up 216 percent; and Escalante, 47 in 1976 over 15 in 1975, up 213 percent. Three areas showed decreases de-creases of January visitations: Wahweap dropped frpm 25,-494 25,-494 in 1975 to 14,582 in 1976, down 43 percent; Lees Ferry dropped from 1,157 in 1975 to 614 in 1976, down 47 percent; and Orange Cuffs dropped from 18 in 1975 to 14 in 1976, down 22 percent. Rainbow Bridge National Monument and Carl Hayden Visitor Center both experienced experienc-ed January increases during 1976 when compared to 1975 figures. Rainbow Bridge climbed from 38 visitors in January last year to 119 visitors in 1976, up 213 percent. Carl Hayden Center increased from 4,645 last year to 7,218 visitors during January Janu-ary this year, up 55 percent. The following number of special use permits were issued by the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area during dur-ing January: boat days, 1,095; fishermen, 1,958; NPS Campground, Camp-ground, 579; backcountry camping, cam-ping, 884; picnickers, 112. Over half of the permits issued for boat days and fishing were used at Wahweap. |
