Commissioners Aler tPublic To Expect Official Information Delivery- of the information in the Grand County Community Com-munity Shelter Plan is to begin be-gin March 12 and Mr. Mars Pope, Chairman of the County Commission, has asked the public to be on the lookout forjt. ; : Each ' county' plan contains information 'about what to do and where to go in case of a nuclear . emergency, along with a complete list of ap.-proved ap.-proved public fallout shelters in the area, and directions on how to reach them. There are also instructions and information explaining how to build a shelter in a home should a person be unable un-able to reach a public shelter. Since many residents live outside of downtown ' city areas, ar-eas, these instructions are of particulah significance. The plan also contains general gen-eral information regarding nuclear radiation and fallout. While it is hoped that resi- dents will never have to use this information, it should be kept, in a safe, convenient place. -. Studies indicate that' in case of a nuclear attack by an enemy,' en-emy,' over 10 million lives would be f aved by proper lall-out lall-out . shelter. . Many people would survive the. initial blast but would then . be. exposed to lethal radiation .fallout unless proper . shelter was provided. .With "this in mind; the De-partment De-partment ' of Defense conducted conduct-ed surveys to determine where the best possible shelter shel-ter would' be. After this ir.-formation ir.-formation was obtained, it was placed in the hands of the State and local county Civil Civ-il Defense officers. The Community Com-munity Shelter Plan "was then prepared from this information. informa-tion. . One of the goals of the plan is to tell every citizen; where shelter is' - located Although most of the public shelter is, to be found in heavily constructed con-structed buildings downtown, the basement' of a home can offer substantial protection to its residents', more- So than was realized even a few years ago. Each of the folders has Instructions In-structions on how to use the walls of a home for shelter for those people who do nnt have community shelter available av-ailable to them. Also included includ-ed is a complete list of supplies sup-plies that would ' be needed during -a nuclear emergency. "Thei ' information' developed develop-ed in the Grand County Community Com-munity Shelter Plan could save the lives of thousands of persons in the event of attack. at-tack. This information has been the result of careful analysis an-alysis and professional planning.- I urge the ; people of Grand County to read the information in-formation carefully and then put it with their other valuable valu-able papers," the Commissioner Commissi-oner said.
