Show for civic better ment In the Spring of 1898, a group of local women decided de-cided to organize a club for "instruction and civic betterment," bet-terment," according to the first report from an original paper written 74 years ago. They then joined the State Federation of Women's Clubs. This organization was named the Busy Women's Club and 13 members joined on March 9, the official founding day of the club. According to the report on the first meetings, the women said of themselves, "We did our own marketing, ran our own errands, and each of us individually have to do our own baking and brewing brew-ing and all that housekeeping necessitates. We are nurse girls too, for hired help of any kind is almost unattainable. unattain-able. Wc are all self-supporting and we are fortunate enough to possess daughters, and we keep them home to help ourselves." This club has grown over the past years to a membership mem-bership of 30 and is now known as the Woman's Literary Liter-ary Club. During their 74 year history, they have helped to better the City of Moab through projects ranging from helping to establish the first library in 1914 to contributing contrib-uting $2,000 to help build the new one. They have also worked in promotion of fire prevention, struggled to gain sidewalks for Moab, worked on the old cemetery organization and each year have served in the City Cleanup Campaign. They campaigned for the first garbage gar-bage cans for streets in Moab; they worked to gain a hospital for the community the building which now houses the Senior Citizens Club and purchased many needed articles for the hospital. They also worked at the Moab Museum several years ago and won a state and national prize for their work in bringing the issue of a rest home for Moab to the ballot this fall. They have been a busy women's club during each of their 74 years. The women will celebrate their anniversary on March 9 at 7 D.m. at Inca Inn and are to appear dressed in attire which was common at the time the club was organized. This should prove a pleasant and productive evening for all who attend. We wish the women well in their future endeavors and ferl that although they are planning their anniversary anniver-sary with a look into the past, they will not let the club rest on its laurals but will continue to be involved in events that concern Moab during the present. |
