Show Hanksville News. . . By Barbara Ekker A drowning in Cataract Cata-ract Canyon was reported report-ed Saturday following a boating accident on the previous Thursday. A raft carrying six persons per-sons overturned six miles upstream from Gypsum Rapid. All passengers pas-sengers in the raft were wearing life jackets when the accident occurred. The body was found at Sheeps Crossing, 30 miles below the accident site and identified as Herman Herbert Fox, 60, Los Angeles, California. San Juan County Sheriff, Rigby Wright, investigated investig-ated and stated that the water was moving at 50,000 cubic feet per second which is water for experts only. Mr. and Mrs. Penn Duncan and Mrs. Bell Taylor visited in Hanksville Hanks-ville from their upper Wayne County homes the fore part of the week. They'd spent the day in the Henry's with a picnic at Starr Springs. Mrs. May Wilson and Miss Una Gillies of Green River enjoyed a luncheon Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ekker Ek-ker and a tour of the new church and school buildings. They visited with other friends in town before returning home that evening. Terry and JillJackson of Cainsville are the parents par-ents of a baby girl born June 1st at the Richfield Hospital. The little miss weighed in at 7 lbs. 12 oz. Welcoming her are four sisters and one brother. bro-ther. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dee Jackson Jack-son and Elmer Peterson of Cainsville. Mrs. Edna Ekker Robi-son Robi-son accompanied her daughter and family, the Roy Mays of Green River, Riv-er, to commencement exercises at the Utah .State University at Logan, Lo-gan, where granddaughter, granddaught-er, Debra, was graduating gradu-ating Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. JoeChes-katy JoeChes-katy are attending graduation grad-uation exercises this week in Grand Junction where their grandson, James Cheskaty, oldest son of Ruth and Wes Cheskaty is finishing his senior year. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Robison and daughter, Elly Mae, were involved in a head-on collision near the Fish Lake turn off Friday afternoon on their return home from Salina. They were struck by a Carbon County vehicle ve-hicle with three elderly persons as occupants. The Robisons only received re-ceived some bumps and bruises but the others involved were rushed to the Sevier Valley Hospital Hos-pital for medical care for cuts. Mr. Robison is a Wayne County deputy sheriff. Jodi Ekker, seven year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Ekker, was rushed to the Moab Hospital Hos-pital Thursday evening following an accident at her home. Her mouth and face were badly bruised from a fall and stitches were necessary to repair re-pair inner mouth damage. dam-age. Mr. and Mrs. Don Jackson and son, Douglas, Doug-las, are visiting his brother, bro-ther, the Dee Jacksons at Cainsville this week from their home in Ogden. Thirty Boy Scouts from Holliday and their 10 leaders stopped in Hanksville Saturday en-route en-route to Lake Powell and Bull Frog area to earn merit badges during their week stay. Their leader, Hugh Sharp and Bob Roberts, stated the boys will be working in geology, rowing, life-saving, life-saving, surveying, and swimming merits. Other leaders included Reed Gordon, Bill Shepard, Ralph Kramer, Cluade Heiner, Bill Mangum, Clyde Carpenter, and Lynn Sharp. Their troop is the sixth in the State for accomplishments and their number is 750. Mr. and Mrs. Ted De-nemme, De-nemme, Northridge, Calif, have been visiting the Jess Ekkers and touring the area. While touring in the Bull Frog area in their Toyota they became mired in quicksand quick-sand and had to walk seven hours to the ranger station. He accompanied them back to their stranded vehicle and got them 'unplugged'. Bill and Pam Fink will be headed to Oregon following fol-lowing his graduation this week from College. Pam is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Cheskaty of LaMesa, California. Mr. and Mrs.Winleboe of Salt Lake City, visited the Harold Ekkers this past weekend. Harold was associated with Mr. Win-dleboe, Win-dleboe, a former employee em-ployee with the Federal Bureau of Raods, now re-tied, re-tied, while he was chairman chair-man of the Wayne County Commission. Some thirty years ago these men and Hugh Swap and Jack Kay surveyed and mapped out the present U-95 during a reconnaissance trip. The present routing of U-95 South of Hanksville has few minor changes from this committee's early proposals. Neva Fay, 17, Rita Ann, 16, and Sybil Marie Ekker, Ek-ker, 15, contestants in the Miss Utah Teen-Ager Contest arrived in Salt Lake Friday and began competition in essay, talent and formal wear. Final competition was held Saturday evening at the Alta Room at the Ramada Inn with Tom Boch, KSL Radio, as official of-ficial emcee. The winner for the pageant was Andrea An-drea Perkins, Blanding. All three Ekker sisters were among the selected finalists. They are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Ekker. Mrs. Sherry Ekker was rushed to the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo Saturday Satur-day for observation by husband, Dennis. Miss Jayme May is spending a week with her grandmother, Mrs. Edna Ekker Robison from her home in Green River. Mrs. Robison returned home Monday from her trip to Logan where she attended graduation exercises ex-ercises for her granddaughter. grand-daughter. The Hanksville Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce is sponsoring the July 4th celebration in Hanksville with a full day of events planned with the evening being topped off with a mutton fry with sour dough bread. Queens will be picked and children's races and concessions will continue through the day. Everyone is invited to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Charles N'oyes have received word that their son, Kenneth, Ken-neth, has been promoted ' to the rank of machinist mate 2nd class. Ken is presently aboard the USS Stien and in Japan. The Hanksville Ward Elders and High Priests Quorm held a mutton bar-beque bar-beque Saturday night for the Relief Society members mem-bers at the parking lot south of the recreation hall. A program was presented pre-sented and a very enjoyable enjoy-able time was enjoyed by many. Mrs. Annetta Noyes is visiting this week at Halls Crossing with daughter, Laura Johns. Ernie Johns is spending this week in Hanksville with an aunt, Ethel Noyes. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Anderson stopped and visited vi-sited Barbara Ekker Monday enroute home to Green River after a weekend on Lake Powell with son, Tim, and family. fami-ly. Mrs. Anderson stopped stop-ped and picked up newspapers news-papers being collected here for the Green River's Ri-ver's Woman Club drive. These papers will be recycled re-cycled and the funds will -go towards Christmas decorations in that city. The Shandells from the Kearns Assembly of God Church performed in Hanksville Sunday evening. even-ing. Those in the group were Kay and Marilyn Smith, Ja Nell Roberts, and Warren Stanton. A group of Christ Ambassadors Am-bassadors accompanied them and distributed tracts in town during the day. The group will perform in Page, Ariz. the end of the week. Loi i Bullard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hutch Bullard, is attending a Music Clinic ;il Snow College this week along with other Wayne music students. Miss Bonnie Noyes returned re-turned home from a fun filled week at Girls Stale in Cedar C'ily. Others representing Wayne County were Coral Sawyer Saw-yer and Kalhy Adams. The Wayne County Fair is being scheduled for June 23rd at Loa. Queen contestants representing rep-resenting Hanksville have been selected with Judy and Elaine Johnson, John-son, sponsored by the Stage Coach Inn and Neva Fay Ekker sponsored by the Hanksville Chamber of Commerce. They have been attending grooming groom-ing classes at Loa each week under the direction of Jerri Chappell along with other contestants from throughout the County. Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Ekker. Blanding. and Mrs. Ruth Trouth, Green River, visited over the weekend with the Horace Ekkers. Carol Ekker is flagging for the road contractor con-tractor on U-95 and Jessie Jes-sie works in the San Juan area for the State Highway High-way Department. Mr. and Mrs. Perry Jackson and daughter, Mrs. Dale Gifford, and family are visiting in Cainsville this week from their home in Clearfield. Ivan Holt will return to the Veterans Hospital, (rand Junction, this wee for a regular checkup check-up and Dee Jackson, Cainsville, will go to the Vet's Hospital in Salt Lake for a check-up on his eyes following major surgery recently. ' Mr. and Mrs. Steve Rasmussen and daughter Stephanie, are now residents resi-dents in Hanksville and residing in the former Mill Wells home. Steve is a brothei- of Mrs. Sherry Ekker and wife, Connie, is a sister of Mutch Milliard. Mr. and Mrs. Mud Avery Av-ery and family from Idaho Ida-ho a re vacat ioning here with her parents, the Ford Webcrs and sisters, sis-ters, M i s. .leannine Hunt and M i s. Ranae Albiccht of Mickncll. Mrs. Cli.i ilene Shirley and children have been visit ing this week in Vernal Ver-nal with hot parents. Her father is the mayor of that city. Mrs. Hae Lene Ekker and sons and Mrs. Sylv ia Hill of Monroe, spent last weekend in Provo visiting the Roy Ekkers. They attended graduation exercises at the Point of the Mountain where Roy is an instructor indiesel mechanics. The Roy Ekkers Ek-kers are moving this week from the Provo area to their new home in Pay son. Hale Robison is working work-ing in the Payson area and plans to recite wedding wed-ding vows in August with Shelia Carter of that city. Mrs. Marjorie Chancy boarded a plane Sundav in Salt Lake for a flight to Ohio where she'll spend a week. Marj manages man-ages the Poor Boy Cafe. Trudy Hunt boarded a flight Monday in Salt Lake for the first leg of a flight to England where she'll spend a month v isiting is-iting her grandmother and aunt. Trudy has been an art student in Salt Lake for the past two years. She is the daughter daught-er of Mr. and Mrs. Reo Hunt. Mr. and Mrs. Lierd from California are visiting vis-iting this week with their son and family, the Dennis Den-nis Lierds. They enjoyed boating and fishing on Powell. |
