Show sports t's fl U f By Ernie Milner Colorado River Dangerous... The tragic death of a local youth this past weekend week-end has again pointed out drastically the dangers of the Canyonlands areas. " This year, as in past years, the high HfTT water of the Colorado River beckons ' ,.' many persons to the river. Along with Li f f'.'Vthe increased number of persons, the I - : dangers are increased and as usual, too "L V many people that are not accustomed to ; . the river are trying to float its danger- " ous waters. Also during the past week, one local guide rescued res-cued four persons in Cataract Canyon, one of the most dangerous in the western United States. This points toward one of two things . . . limited use by unauthorized persons or complete denial of use by anyone. In northern Utah, the Provo River has also claimed the lives of at least two young persons this year. Authorities there are trying to pass regulations forbidding tubing on its waters during the heavy runoff period. Perhaps this would save lives, but it is always the ones that don't follow the rules and guide lines that have to pay the price. This area is fortunate to have such an attraction as the Colorado River and it should be pointed out to residents, as well as visitors, that this country is not only beautiful, but dangerous. The loss of the life of a motorcyclist this past month again points out the hazards of the rough terrain surrounding sur-rounding Moab. With the influx of visitors each spring and summer, sum-mer, more and more are coming to do their thing and they are unaware of the dangers they face. Local tour guides have limited their tours to safe and interesting country, but the individual that goes it on his own usually has not had the opportunity to be in the area prior to his going out in the back country. |
