Show Grand Commission Hits REA Lake Application The Grand County Commission, Commis-sion, this week, supported private pri-vate power companies in their protest of an application of Raft River REA to supply service in Box Elder and Toole To-ole Counties. The Commission passed a resolution opposing Raft River Riv-er REA's petition to supply industrial power at a rate of 3.1 mills per Kw hour to potential po-tential industrial customers in a limited area for several reasons: First because bringing federal fed-eral power into a limited area for industrial purposes offers an unfair advantage for the limited area, to the disadvantage of other counties coun-ties in the attraction of new industry. Second, the Commission Com-mission indicated they felt existing industries in Grand County, such as Texas Gulf Sulphur, would be competing at a disadvantage with industries indus-tries in Box Elder and Tooele Icounties receiving tax subsidized sub-sidized federal electric power, pow-er, which would consequently lead to the distress of the economic and industrial well being of Grand county and the State of Utah. 1 The Commission thirdly indicated in-dicated that Raft River REA does not pay slate or federal income taxes on its operation and pays property taxes based bas-ed upon an assessment formula form-ula substantially below the assessment of similar facilities facili-ties installed by Ur&L and other private eleclnc compan ies of the State. They therefore there-fore urged the overall welfare wel-fare of the Stale be considered consider-ed and the Haft River REA application be denied. |
