Show isnficeHo Ouckar oos Dump Moab; Devils Drop 2nd Leaaue Game by Danny Price The Moab Red Devil basketball bas-ketball team, after dropping their second straight conference confer-ence game with a 60-56 loss to Monticello last Friday, will try to snare their first league win tomorrow night when they travel to Green River for a 8:00 p.m. contest. The Red Devils, 0-2 in league lea-gue play and 2-9 overall, will send a low 50.7 scoring average aver-age per. game into the Green River battle and will probably probab-ly have to top their average if they hope to return home with a victory. GCHS cage coach, Ward Curtis, will rely on team scoring leaders Ben Davidson (12.9) and Jerry Stewart (12. 1) and the rebounding of John Fossey and Roy Brown to carry the Red Devils past the Green River five. The Red Devils battled Monticello to the wire last week only to lose the encount er 60-56 in the waning minutes min-utes as the Buckaroos moved mov-ed into the league lead with their second conference victorytheir vic-torytheir other win being a upset over highly-regarded East Carbon. The loss dropped Moab into in-to the Region Six Southern Division cellar, leaving the Red Devils to fight an uphill battle the rest of the season regarding any hopes of a con ference title. Moab played nip and tuck throughout the first half as the Red Devils held a 16-14 lead at the end of the opening quarter and held on to take a slim 30-27 advantage at the halfway mark. The clutch shooting of Davidson Dav-idson and Stewart, plus the rebounding of Brown and Fossey kept the Red Devils moving throughout the first two periods. Stewart, hitting mainly on long jumpers, netted net-ted 10 markers in the first half, while Davidson added eight. Husky Buckaroo forward Truitt Purcell led the Monticello Monti-cello attack in the first half, dipping in 13 points. The Buckaroos came out scoring in the third period and quickly did away with the Red Devils three point advantage ad-vantage and took a 44-42 lead into the final period of play. Monticello, behind the hot shooting of guards Bill Man-zanares Man-zanares and Mark Adams, increased the margin to 52-47 52-47 with only four minutes remaining re-maining in the game and then the Red Devils found themselves them-selves in foul trouble to make things even worse for the , home standing quintet. Behind 55-51, Moab lost forward John Fossey with two minutes showing on the clock and the Buckaroos took advantage of the loss as guard Bill Manzanares hit on two jump shots to increase the Margin to 59-52, the big--gest lead of the game. Then Moab's top scorer, Ben Davidson, fouled out with one and a half minutes remaining, re-maining, leaving the game with 18 points to his credit.. With two starters out, the Red devils fought back as Jim Cowan sank ' two ' free , throws as did guard Kenny. Yama and quickly Moab was in range at' 59-56. But a foul broke the Red Devils back as Buckaroo for' ward Frank Young sank .a charity toss with 10 seconds ' remaining to give Monticello a four point margin and put the game out of reach of the Moab quintet. - Davidson finished the evening even-ing with 18 points, while Jer-1 ry Stewart pumped in 13.' Junior center Roy Brown add ed 10, while John Fossey fin-, ished with 7 points before' fouling out. - ' Guard Kenny Yama sank-six sank-six and Jim Cowan picked up two with his last minute fredk throws to complete the Red Devil scoring. . . ? The Moab Junior Varsity dumped the Monticello PV'p 48-40 in the preliminary game as John Cowan lead the attack at-tack with 15 points. Moab jumped off to a 10-6 first quarter lead, held a 2423 halftime lead and then shook-off shook-off the Buckaroos second hair surge for victory.
