Show Moab Freight Line Business Shows Uptrend in Community's Economy Rod Phillips, manager of , Garrett Freight's Moab dock turned up some interesting stastistics this week as he compiled his end-of-the year progress report. The records of tonnage hauled by the freight company com-pany over the past 8 years are a good indication of the business economy of Moab, showing a dramatic incline in the early 60's during the TGS potash construction period, per-iod, and a just-as-dramatic slump in 1964 when the construction con-struction workers moved out. The tonnage graph at Garrett Gar-rett reached its lowest ebb in 1966, then began a startling IP ;i , t 9 Wq,oooi ! Revenues !' , . Indications Indica-tions are that Moab is recovering recov-ering economically at an even ev-en greater pace than the Garrett Gar-rett charts indicates. The freight company chart begins in 1960, when tonnage at the Moab dock totaled 21, 777,900 pounds. By 1961 the total had increased to 23,899, 200 lbs., and the all-time high was reached in 1962 when 26,317,100 pounds of freight were delivered by Garrett. 1963 saw the beginning of a decline. Only 19,956,100 lbs. of freight was delivered during dur-ing the year; 1964 figures were still lower, 15,520,900, and in 1965 the trend continued continu-ed downward with a total freight delivery of 15,801,400. The freight business in Moab bottomed in 1966 with only 14,828,100 pounds delivered by Garrett. Last year, 1967, saw the chart gush upward. A total of 16,373.400 pounds of freight was delivered despite additional addi-tional competition. The freight increase, as it coincides with Moab's economic econ-omic trend, should be interesting inter-esting to follow for the next few years. Mining which was responsible for the peak 1962 prosperity, appears to be enjoying en-joying a comeback, and indications in-dications are the uranium, in particular, may even top the peak years during the '50:s boom. |
