Show Carolina Power Places Huge N-Power Order Carolina Power & Light has placed the largest order ever made at one time for nuclear power units. The order includes three General Electric 830 mwe nuclear nu-clear steam supply system:-, and associated turbine generators. gener-ators. Total investment of the; projects is estimated at $509 million, according to information informa-tion released to Nuclear Industry In-dustry Magazine. CP&L gave as reason for purchasing all three units now as, "It seemed like a good deal for the company." Tentatively chosen is a site near the mouth of Cape Fear river, at Southport, S.C., for two of the units, where an abundance of water from the Atlantic Ocean for cooling purposes is available. These two units would go into operation oper-ation in 1973 and 1974, respectively. respec-tively. The third unit will be located locat-ed elsewhere, although the site has not yet been selected If the Southport site proves prov-es satisfactory after investigation, investi-gation, the utility company hopes to submit application for construction permits by July of this year for the first two units. United Engineers and Constructors has been engaged en-gaged as architect-engineer. Toledo Edison Co. and Cleveland Electric Illuminating Illuminat-ing Co. will build nn 800 mwe nuclear power plant near Lake Erie, with an operation goal set for 1971. This plant will cost an estimated $138 million, and is one of four-planned four-planned in the Central Area Power Coordination Group. |
