Show State Sen. Sam J. Taylor Will Not Seek Third Term State Senator Sam J. Taylor, R-Moab, this week formally announced to the Grand county coun-ty Republican Party that he would not seek reelection to the Senate this fall. Taylor said he was making the announcement at this time to give prospective candidates can-didates ample time to make plans prior to the May 10 filing fil-ing deadline. The Moab legislator has been a member of the Senate for seven years, representing at the present Grand, Emery, Uintah and Daggett counties. He is completing his second term of office. Appointed to the Senate in 1962 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation res-ignation of Charles A. Steen, he was reelected twice to the post. During the past Legislative Session, Sen. Taylor was chairman of the Senate State and Federal Affairs Committee; Commit-tee; chairman of the Appropriations Appro-priations subcommittee oi Welfare, and served on the Rules and Judiciary Committees. Commit-tees. He served two years on the Legislaitve Council, and is currently chairman of the interim Joint Legal Services committee. He was the chief sponsor of the four major governmental reorgan;zation-measures reorgan;zation-measures which resulted from the work of the publicind Little Hoover committee. The bills are now functioning. Cited as reasons for withdrawing with-drawing as a candidate this year were increased business pressures and a desire to devote de-vote more t;me to development develop-ment and activities in Moab and Grand county. "Although seven years of Senate service brings with it certain advantages advan-tages of seniority that can be helpful to an area, it a)sr denies the privilege of service to others who might do outstanding out-standing jobs," Sen. Taylor said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed en-joyed serving, and feel I have ' contributed to the State of Utah. But, I feel it is lime I stepped aside and placed my seat on the market," he said. He went on to say that thi problems of representing a district which extends clear to the Wyoming border are considerable. "I feel strongly that my future efforts in public pub-lic service should be directed more closely to my own county coun-ty and community without feeling any particular rcsyon-sibilily rcsyon-sibilily to other areas of the State," he said. Taylor emphasized that the counties of his district should resist the temptation of falling fall-ing into the trap of "trading" the seal between themselves. "We have loo much at slake in rural Utah to send anyone other than our strongest people peo-ple to represent us in the Senate," he said. Sen. Taylor expressed his deep appreciation to all those who had encouraged him and assisted with his two successful success-ful Senate campaigns.
