Show D. a R. G. GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT. : Appreciating the immense interests of the Gould lines in Utah, the Rio Grande has decided to re-establish the office of general superintendent at Salt Lake City for the Rio Grande Western lines. It is understood that the office was tendered to Mr. Welby but for personal reasons he declined, and another most experienced railroad man, whose name is reserved re-served until official announcement of it is made, has been selected i or the place. This is another recognition of the growing power and importance of the Gould interests that will in a few months more have a through line to the coast. It is understood that Mr. Welby will be general superintendent of the Denver & Rio Grande proper, with headquarters at Denver. This last is the only disappointment in the announcement, for no matter . how capable the new man may be, the people of Salt Lake wanted Mr. Welby in the position here because be-cause there is no one more capable, and he has been here so long and has drawn to him so many friends who want to see him honored to the utmost, and whose presence among us is an every day comfort and inspiration, that they rebel at his going away and feel like charging Denver with conspiracy in drawing him to Colorado. He is such an old standby ' ' . that his going away is like moving the Tabernacle or-Walker's or-Walker's corner. All the same they congratulate Denver upon his going there. The distinct loss to Salt Lake will be a distinct gain to our pretentious neighbor beyond the great range, and we congratulate congratu-late it. If enough of our best men are called away to the Colorado capital it will have some things to be - really proud of one of these days. Mr. Welby is not only going there in person, but he is going to carry with him the very best wishes of all his hosts of friends in Utah. |
