Show Just Folks By EDGAR A. GUEST CRANKMIRE ON MEN Said Old Crankmire: "We hear about gunfire and gas And the evils of nations and men in the mass. We hear of explosions and ships sunk at sea, Which proves just how cruel we humans can be, But it's only the few ever hear of the man Who goes about .doing the good that he can. "In nations and races mankind at the best Has little to boast of, it must be confessed. All history tells us they've slaughtered and slain Their fellows in warfare advantage advan-tage to gain. But left to himself every man of the clan Is eager to do all the good that he can. "As a neighbor, a man will go out of his way To all who may need it a kind word to say. He'll think of the lonely, the sick anil the uri He'll stick to the bargain which proves to be bad. In matters of honor he'll keep to his word. Which nations and races consider absurd. "Mankind in the mass seems a horrible thing. But it's not to that sort of a fellow fel-low I cling. My hope's in that man which all neighborhoods know, The friend in the dark hours of trouble and woe, The kind and the gentle and brave-hearted man Who goes about doing the good that he can."
