Salt Lake City police said they would seek a first degree murder complaint com-plaint against Samuel Martinez, 39, operajor of the Corona cafe at 528 West Second South street.' Sergeant Sherman Falkenrath, chief of the detective bureau; said Martinez confessed to shooting Galerno Gal-erno after the latter had struck him in a street fight Galerno, lying ly-ing on a bed in the police emergency emer-gency hospital, identified Martinez as his assailant, Sergeant Falkenrath Falken-rath said. Filing of the murder charges had been held up pending outcome of the autopsy, which was "a mere formality" but necessary for the charges, the officer said. The victim died en route from the emergency hospital to the Salt Lake General hospital several hours after the shooting. Meanwhile, detectives attempted to learn the correct name of the victim. He was known In Salt Lake City as Galerno, Sergeant Falkenrath said, but a social security secur-ity card in his possession, issued at Joseph, Ore., less than a year ago, listed his name as Louis Gai-lindo Gai-lindo Jr. A man who shared his home, Margarito Hurtado, told detectives de-tectives his name was Louis Ga-1 lento. Police also held Albert Archu-letto, Archu-letto, 21, and Raymondo Saenz, 27, both railroad workers, as material witnesses and for investigation in the case. After his identification by the dying man, Martinez made a written writ-ten confession of the crime, Sergeant Ser-geant Falkenrath said. The confession allegedly told how Martinez ejected Galemo, Saenz and Archuletto from his cafe Saturday night when they created a disturbance; how the three men attacked Martinez about 10 p. m. when he left the cafe to go to a liquor store, and how Martinez Mar-tinez then returned to the cafe, obtained a .32-caliber automatic pistol and went out looking for the men. He found them, he reportedly told detectives, at Fourth West and Second South streets and fired four times, two of the bullets striking Galerno In the abdomen. According to officers, he ran to the rear of a residence at 636 West First South street, where he hid the gun in some weeds, and returned to the cafe. After his arrest, he took officers offi-cers to the spot and showed them where the weapon was hidden and where he stood at the time of the shooting, detectives said. |
