Paramount Pictures' Claudette Colbert, with a salary of 8301.-944, 8301.-944, and Lever Brothers', F. A. Countway, with salary and bonuses bo-nuses aggregating 8489,713, led the list released by the treasury department of 400 Individuals paid 875,000 or more by American Ameri-can corporations year before -hurt: -' Countway, head of the U. S. subsidiary of a British concern, along with Thomas J. Watson, International Business Machine chief, was the only person to top the 8400,000 msrk for 1938, a year marked by business recession. re-cession. Watson's remuneration remunera-tion totaled 8453,440. Moving picture figures, as usual, dominated the select coterie co-terie that received more than 875,000 from 194 corporations In 23 states. The list numbered 84 stars and executives better then one out of every five names. A breakdown by states revealed re-vealed New York leading with 174 salaries of 875,000 or over; Michigan second, with 44, with Pennsylavnia, Illinois and California Cali-fornia running In that order, with 34. 33, and 32, respectively. By corporations, 20th Century Fox led, paying 34 persons 875,-000 875,-000 and up. Paramount Pictures Pic-tures was a close second, with 33. Then came General Motors, 22; E. I. du Pont de Nemours, 17, and Samuel Goldwyn, Inc. Ltd., 8. In the movie realm, Warner Baxter followed Miss Colbert, with 8379,807; then came Producer Pro-ducer Darryl Zanuck, 8265,000; Blng Crosby, 8260,000, snd Jsck Benny, 8250,000. In the field of Industry, Count-way Count-way and Watson were followed by Eugene J. Grace (Bethlehem Steel), 8378,698; G. W. Hill (American Tobacco company), 8331,348; W. S. Knudsen (General (Gen-eral Motors), 8303,400, and S. P. Skouras (National Theaters Amusement company), 8254,500. Next to Miss Colbert, Baxter, Crosby and Benny, the hlghest-"paid hlghest-"paid movie-stars werer George Raft, 8186,964; Fred McMurray, 8183,333; Loretta Young, 8181.615; Alice Faye, 8169,791; Charles Boyer, $161,-000; $161,-000; Bob Burns. $155,952; Joel ' McCrea, 8152,000; Leslie Howard, How-ard, 8141,249; Tyrone Power, 8140,750; Gary Cooper, $140,129; Merle Oberon, 8139,285; Fredric March, 8136.000, and Marlene Dietrich, 8130,000. Among prominent automobile Industry executives listed, and their earnings, were Easel Ford, 8113.291.05; Welter P. Chrysler, 8162,083.47; Alfred P. Sloan Jr., chairman of the board of G. M., 164,450. Owen D. Young was paid 8245,447.02 by the General Electric Elec-tric company, and Gerard Swope earned the same amount with the company. The movie makers, however, comprised by far the largest group. Ssmuel Goldwyn, Inc., paid 8100,000 to Violinist Jascha Helfetz. Shirley Temple was paid 8114.848.17 by 20th Century Fox, and the same firm paid 838,000 to Don Ameche; 8113,000 to Sonja Henle; 8125,475 to Victor Vic-tor McLaglen; 8140,750 to Tyrone Ty-rone Power; 887,500 to Power's wife, Annabella. |
