Show FOURTH BRITISH WARSHIP SUNK Sea War Claims 8 Ships and 118 Lives LONDON, Jan. 22 (UP)-The war at sea claimed at least eight ships over the week end. Including the 1458-ton British destroyer Grenvllle, and an estimated 111 Uvea, -o . The Grenvllle, a flotilla leader, went down In the North sea Saturday, Sat-urday, the victim of a mine or torpedo, tor-pedo, . the admiralty announced. Eight men were known to have been killed and the admiralty said that 73 missing "must be presumed to have lost their Uvea. The survivors sur-vivors totaled 118, of whom many were Injured seriously. The Grenvllle was the fourth British destroyer lost. Other ships lost were: The British steamer Ferryhlll of 1086 tons, which sank after atrtk- Ing a mine off the northeast coast of Britain. Twelve members of the crew of 14 were believed lost Swedish Skip Bunk The Swedish steamer Flandrla, of approximately 900 tons, which sank after hitting two mines en route from Amsterdam to Gothenburg. Gothen-burg. Seventeen of the 21 crew members were killed. The Danish ship Tekla, of 1215 tons, believed to have struck a mine off the northeast coast of Scotland. The captain and eight members of the crew were reported report-ed missing. At Haugesund, Norway, It was reported that the Norwegian steamer Boreas had picked up a seaman who said his ship, the Fuxen, hsd been sunk in the North sea either by a mine or a torpedo. Blast Sinks Tanker The British tanker Caroniriver, of 8707 tons, exploded and sank within 20 minutes after it left a port on the southwest coast of Britain to undergo tests. Between 12 and 20 members of -the crew were injured. The British steamer Protesllaus, 9577 tons, was wrecked in the vicinity vi-cinity of a west coast port, presumably presum-ably by a mine. The Esthonian steamer Nautie, 2050 tons, sank off the Shetland Islands. Its crew was ssid to have been rescued. The 10,786-ton British liner Llandaff Castle limped back to a south coast port with a damaged bow as a result of a collision. |
