Show POLICE VETERAN TAKEHBY DEATH Richard (Uncle Dick) Beynon, 68, who for 29 years coupled his duties in the Salt Lake City pollcs department depart-ment with kindly philoaophy, died Sunday afternoon at his residence, 1T0 Fifth East street He had been confined to his bed several months. His life devoted to the aid and interest of others, his affection for sons gained friends for him almost daily during his many years of walking walk-ing a beat Made Bailiff Later relieved of street duty, he was made police court bailiff. The friendly voice of "Uncle Dick" was then often heard over local radio broadcasting stations, giving police bulletins and numerous talks. He was also Instrumental in the Organization Organ-ization of the Police Mutual Aid association for the assistance of families of officers who died in the line of duty. Failing eyesight caused the retirement re-tirement of the veteran officer in October. 1931. He was born in Swansea, Glamorganshire, Glamor-ganshire, Wales, March 2, 1869, and came to Salt Lake City at the age of 7 years. HU education was re-reived re-reived in public schools of Salt Lake City and San Francisco and his first employment waa with the Denver A Rio Grande Western railroad as a painter. Appointed Guard In 1893 he was appointed a jail guard, but after three years he returned re-turned to the service of the railroad rail-road company for 14 years more. Entering the police service again in 1910, he remained active until his retirement. An active lodge man, he was a past president of the Utah State Moose association and was the only Utahn to be decorated with the pilgrim pil-grim degree of merit, the highest honor In Moosedom. He was also a past consul commander of the Woodmen of the World. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Augusta Rosenthal Beynon ; two sisters, sis-ters, Mrs. Winifred Clark, San Diego, and Mrs. Lida A. Harridge, Salt Lake City, and the following sons and daughters, R. Fred W. Beynon, Charles H. Beynon, Raymond Ray-mond G. Beynon, Warren Beynon, Jessie P. Beynon, Mrs. Helen Marie Hawthorne and Mrs. Gladys E. Langford, Salt Lake City, and 17 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted con-ducted Wednesday at 12:30 p. m. In the L. D. S. Belvedere ward chapel, with interment in the City cemetery. |
