Show STRIKE CLOSES ' DINING-ROOMS Special to The Telegram I OGDEN, July 1 Thirty-five em- : ployes of the culinary department of the Ben Lomond hotel went on strike at noon today. All dining rooms except the grlU were closed. Luncheon was not served members mem-bers of the exclusive Weber club or luncheon clubs scheduled In the private dining rooms. The public coffee shop waa cloaed, but girls pressed into service from other departments took care of the malngrill dining room while the manager, E. T. Fitzgerald, directed the kitchen. Ralph H. Fuller, chairman of the employes'' negotiating committee, asserted the strike was 100 per cent effective among regular employes of the culinary department. The atrike, according to a statement state-ment Issued by Culinary Alliance, local No. 899, came after weeks of negotiation had resulted In a deadlock. dead-lock. The hotel is charged by the culinary alliance with violation of the Wagner labor relations act by intimidation of employee. "Negotiations,' the statement said, "were carried on by an attorney at-torney from Salt Lake City for aix weeks. The attorney wasnt even given the power to reach an agree-- agree-- menti The result was- ttradtock. The culinary alliance asked that the case be turned over to the industrial indus-trial commission in order that it might still settle the difference without calling a strike. The hotel refused to go through the procedure of arbitration ao we were forced to strike to gain our ends." Pay scale asked by the alliance is waitresses, S2 per shift of eight hours; waiters, $3 per shift; dishwashers, dish-washers, $2.80 per shift; miscellaneous miscellane-ous kitchen help, $3 per shift; second sec-ond cook, $ per shift; fry cooks, $4.90 per shift With the exception of waitresses, all shifts would be nine hours. Mr. Fitxgerald, found In the kitchen kitch-en with his sleeves rolled up, dishing up salads, said he was too busy to issue a statement. Oscar W. Carlson, Carl-son, Salt Lake City attorney, who haa been carrying on negotiation! for the operator!, could not be reached immediately. The hearing on the employee' chargea of violation of the Wagner act is scheduled before the industrial indus-trial commission in the city hall in Ogden at 10 a. m. |
