Show FRANK K. BAKER i&swSI TtlESHAIinPOHTI'tOITOft, ' Utah'sace-scngaskeerrhouIdump inlol slightly more formidable array of title-defending Aggies when they invade Logan Friday and Saturday than th Montana State Bobcats met last week-end in their divided di-vided series with he champions. As many critics feared, the Aggies seemed to show the strain of their long train ride to New York City. In spotting the Bobcats Bob-cats a 17-0 lead, the Aggies played ragged ball the first. night, which was only one day after they had returned home. In putting on the pressure then to come within seven points of catching up at the half which ended, 22-19, for the visitors, the Aggies demonstrated that they still have a world of possibilities. possi-bilities. They played that kind of driving, formidable basketball in their first game of the season at Provo when they beat the Cougars. Big Ed Wade has been the most consistent performer for the Aggies this season. Kent Ryan, the captain, is still far below par because his football performance In the east-west east-west all-star gam at San Francisco kept him from starting practice as early as the ethers. Ryan's passing was ragged in the opening series at Provo and he was not in such good fettle in the east. - The team ought to play a lot smoother ball now, however, how-ever, after a full week of uninterrupted drill at home, Utah turn safely anticipate a tough straggle on their hands. In Wade, especially, and Elmo Garff, his running mate at guard, the Aggies have a far more formidable defense to fling at Utah's antimated beanpoles than B. Y. U. had in the opening game of last week's series here at the Deseret gym. Wade alone can be counted upon to spike a lot of rebound baskets which Orlo Childs, Howard Berg and Merlin Ahlquist were making in the first game against the Cougars. The fact that none of these lanky stars went so well in the second game bears out the suspicion that they haven't any too much stamina, and seems to justify Coach Vadal Peterson's attempt to keep them moving in and out of he game as much as possible to conserve their energy. In coming within a point of the Utes Saturday night, the Cougars seemed to be just a little faster afoot than the Utes were that night. This fleetness and inspirational inspira-tional drive from a team which the night before had been completely outstepped featured their brilliant rally toward the end of the game. e e Utah, It appears, Is capable of playing twe distinct brands of ball this season the careful, deliberate brand they had Friday with their four beanpoles In the game, and the driving, flashy brand that featured Stewart Pendleton, Parry Wilson, Harold Miller and Bob Mulllca In the waning minutes min-utes of Saturday's game. Miller incidentally has gotten away to what promises to be the greatest season In his career. He is rustling the ball vigorously, yet with greater craftiness than he has had la J previous years when he was prone to foul under such conditions. |
