Such a course rapidly defeats Its own ends. While we want the baby to be bunting with the good health which comes from a nourishing diet, we can't make up our mistakes mis-takes in Just a few days. New foods have to be offered in cautious amounts, so as to woo the stomach , to their acceptance. Only one new food should be offered at one time and Its effect on the baby should be carefully noted. If we offer several new foods and the baby is ( upset we have no way of checking which one caused the mischief. Increase by Teaapeoafult) After the initial spoonful or so has been tried we may increase the food by teaspoonful quantities until such time as baby can negotiate the ordinary amount without reaction of any kind. Caution must be exercised In add- ( lng to the strength of the milk formula. for-mula. If baby is getting only 15 ounces of milk, let us say, and the formula needs to be strengthened to If ounces,. don't make the mla- take of adding that four ounces all 1 in one day. Add it an ounce at a time, every day or every other day. and note what happens. By such slow steps we give the baby's stomach stom-ach an opportunity to get accus- , tomed to the new demands made upon it. Orgy of Overfeeding . It might be possible for a baby to show no particular reaction right , , at first to a vastly increased diet. Then the accumulated outrages to his digestion would cause such a major upheaval that the feeding program would have to be restricted to lower than its ordinary level. 1 Once the baby has been upset by an orgy of overfeeding the diet has to be worked back to its former level by the most cautious degrees.
