Show Steam-Heated Airport Runway Proposed By Utah Legislator and His Aviator Son ' Increased safety for airplane landings In stormy weather was the goal announced Tuesday by State Representative Henry Peterson Pet-erson of Logan and his son, H. L. Peterson of Salt Lake City, on completion of their plans for a steam-heated airport runway. The son, himself an airplane pilot, devised the plan, which calls 1 for a network of steam pipes un- , der an oil-cinder mulch runway to prevent snow forming on the surface, and for lines of fog-piercing fog-piercing light flush with the border bor-der of the runway. The Petersons reported that meetings with city, state and federal fed-eral officials are being planned in an sf fort to have one such runway constructed at the municipal air- . port. Landing In snowstorms or fog Is extremely hazardous, as I know from experience," the younger Mr. Peterson said Tuesday. Under our plan, the runway would be of oil-mulched cinders underlaid with coarse gravel so that the snow is melted as it falls by ths hot steam pipes and can drain away." |
