Show WENDEL KIDNAP TRIAL LAUNCHED NEW YORK, Feb. 9 District Attorney William F. X. Geoghan. opening the state's case against three of five men accused of kidnaping kid-naping Paul S. Wendel and forcing him to confess falsely to the Lind-ibergh Lind-ibergh kidnsping. todsy described Ellis H. Parker, Burlington county. New Jersey, chief of detectives, as "the brains of the plot." Wendel sat directly behind the three defendants. Murrsy Bleefeld. Martin Schlossmaa and Harry Weiss. Ellis Parker Jr. and his fsther were named in the Indictment, but eSovernor Harry G. Hoffman of New Jersey refused to extradite them to -NeurTortt. Wendel testified he was returning return-ing to his hotel here on the afternoon after-noon of February li, 1M, and was forced into a car He aaid he was taken to Brooklyn, handcuffed and taken to the garage where he waa held. When Bleefeld. Weiss and Schloasman accused him of the kidnaping, kid-naping, he ssld, he urged them to communicate with Ellis Parker Sr. or Attorney General David T. Wilents of New Jersey. NEWARK. N. J., Feb. 9 H" Ellis Parker, Burlington county detective chief, and his son. Ellis Jr.. pleaded innocent today to federal indict-menta indict-menta in the Paul H. Wendel kidnaping kid-naping and April 19 waa set for their trial. Their counsel filed a demurrer and said they would file briefs to uphold their plea against the validity valid-ity of the charges by February 19. |
