By John Bossettl Uncle Sam's new 1 20 bills, showing show-ing the White House balcony, have confused cautious Utah merchants, Sherwood M. Anderson, resident agent U. S. secret service, said Monday. The new federal reserve notes, issued in July, frequently are being mistaken as counterfeit Confusion arises from the fact that the backs of the new bills are quite different from those formerly printed. "And now, to add to the problem, prob-lem, several series of counterfeits of the new notes are showing up," Mr. Anderson said. Two "floater" counterfeits have been reported in Salt Laks City, but it doee not appear an organised gang Is distributing them here, he declared. Besides picturing the White House balcony, the legitimate $20 bills with the "new look" show four chimneys on the White House instead of two. The windows of the presidential mansion appear to be open, and the foliage around the building la much heavier ' and darker, than on previous bills. The words "The White House" replace "White House," and the flag atop the building droops instead in-stead of flying out straight The phony reproductions of the new 20s have a "flat faded appearance," ap-pearance," with noticeable defects in the Andrew Jackson portrait on the front of the bllL The portraits por-traits should have shaded lines in the hair and a collar which is not solid black. - |
