Salt Lake City police captured two alleged al-leged safecrackers early Friday In the Salt Lake Beauty and Barber Bar-ber Supply Co, 13? E. 3rd South. - Booked for Investigation of safe burglary at the city jail are James Munson McDermott 36, and Frank Walter Warden, 32, both of 307 E. 2nd South, arrested at 2:30 am., while attempting to hide behind a large safe which had been forced. Close Mouthed Although admitting details of their entry into the building, the two suspects, police reported, were "close mouthed" as to their recent activities. Lt M. D. McGinn Is. who is di- recting the investigation, said it was too early Friday to make any definite statement but that the two men may be linked with several sev-eral "unprofessional" safecrackings safecrack-ings included in the wave which has plagued police for the past few weeks. Touched off by a report from J. L. Karr Jr., 1191 Stratford ave. In charge of the service department depart-ment nt the store, that a radio was missing, police Investigation revealed that Warden and McDermott McDer-mott had visited the store twice during the night Return of Mr. Kan's radio assumed as-sumed a personal note when he revealed he had been a guard at the state prison at the time of McDermott's confinement there. The police began to close on the two suspects when Patrolmen Edward Jackson and Archie Bu-kosky Bu-kosky noticed a broken window over which a heavy screen had been replaced at the rear of the building. While Officer Bukoaky covered the front entrance. Officer Jackson remained at the rear and called for reinforcements. Upon arrival of Detective G. D. Holt and Patrolmen O. L. Lasater and W. A. Stroud, Jackson climbed through the window and found McDermott and Warden attempting attempt-ing to hide behind the safe. Kicked la Window McDermott said he kicked in the window and after he and Warden entered the building, replaced re-placed the heavy screen, leaving Warden there as a lookout Checking the building for tools with which to work, McDermott opened the larger safe, but found nothing, he told officers, and then he and Warden wheeled a smaller safe to the rear of the building and commenced work on that He said they noticed reflections of the officers' flashlights and ran to the front of the building with the idea of crashing through the glass door at the front but when they saw their exit was barred, ran back to the rear, where officers offi-cers already were entering. Had Marked Chisel Apparently the two had previously previ-ously entered the I A M Rug at Linoleum Co., 151 S. State, for among the chisels and screw drivers driv-ers found on McDermott was a chisel stamped with the I A M mark. Investigation showed the rug company building had been entered, but nothing was missing except the chisels. |
