Show Dern Plans Bold Effort to Capture Lewis' Crown IRA WILL TAKE MANY CHANCES AGAINST CHAMP Salt Lake Ace Discards Caution Cau-tion for Thursday Night's Arena Encounter Ed "Strangler" Lewis, master showman show-man and one of the greatest wrestlers wres-tlers in the history of the game, will be at hi best Thursday night when he crawls through the ropee to tussle with Ira Dern In a championship match. The bout, which is being taged a day earlier than usual, will be a beat two out of three fails tussle with a to-minute time limit. Thursday's appearance probably will be Lewis' last for a good many months, because the "Strangler" Is one of the few wrertler who signs up months ahead for his matches. HAS DKAW TO BIS CBEDIT Ira commands the respect of the "Strangler" because he ts one of the few wrestlers who has held the world's heavyweight championship claimant to a draw during the past few yeara, and because Dern held Jimmy Londos in check for more than an hour and thirty minutes in the local arena last July. Such feats aa these should give Ira a high rating. Lewis often has told Promoter R Verne McCullough that Dern not only is one of the best heavyweights he has met, but that he would be a sen-saUon sen-saUon in the east, where some heavy-weighta heavy-weighta not nearly as good aa Dern, and many men Ira has beaten go over with a bang. Ira has more than held ills own with many headllners from the east and only last week triumphed over Dr. Len Hall, a highly respected young grappler from Boston. Then, too, John Freberg and Stanley Pinto bowed to Dern, and these two men have no trouble staying in the headline head-line class. Dern plans to throw caution to the four winds Thursday night and openly open-ly admits that ha will take plenty of chances in an attempt to snare a victory. In other words, the fans may look forward to seeing Ira at his best and under these conditions a great match should ensue. Lewis may outsmart Dern, but certainly he will not outfight him Thursday night. The supporting card promises some thrills that will keep the fans on edge throughout the evening and features Hy Sherman against Cy Holicomb, the highly touted Cleveland, Ohio, welterweight tussler who is In Salt Lake trying to arrange with Promoter McCullough for a match with Jack Reynolds. If Holicomb triumphs over Hy, he probably will get the call to meet the world's welterweight champion, who Is expected to be In Salt Lake during the early spring. DETTON VS. LONGBON Dean Detton and BiU Longson are all primed to renew their long standing stand-ing feud and It wiU be up to Long-son Long-son to show Dean that he is still to be considered In the intermountaln heavyweight tituaUon. Detton whipped Bill the last Ume they met, but the latter promises to get revenge re-venge for this defeat Jack O'Hara, rather cocky because he finished second only to Hy Shar-man Shar-man in the western welterweight tournament, tackles a tough grappler In Ralph Morley in the opening special event |
