Show SUTHERLAND SAYS SMOOT FIGHT IS ABOUT OVER Former Congressman Declares That but for Lcilich Charges an Inrestlratlon Would Earc Resulted. - V Former Congressman George Sutherland, Suther-land, who returned with former United States Senator Joseph L. Rawlins from Washington yesterday, Is of the opinion opin-ion that the matter. of unseating Heed Smoot from the United States Senate will never progress any further than if has. He believes that an Investigation would have been made had not the Rev. J. Ik Leilich presented ' the affidavit charging Smoot with polygamy. "Senator Smoot denied at once that he had more than one wife. This was followed by the protest by the Ministerial Ministe-rial association deprecating Leilich's move. This caused many Senators to believe Leilich's affidavit was not well grounded. This weakened the other protest. But for Leilich's affidavit I believe an Investigation would have been conducted, but am now of the opinion that no Investigation will be held. "Senator Smoot made a most favorable favor-able Impression upon all with whom he came In contact, by reason of his Intelligent In-telligent appearance and forceful demeanor. de-meanor. He made a good Impression on President Roosevelt, and they were In private conversation a quarter of an hour the day they were Introduced. The conference was satisfactory to Senator Smoot." Former Congressman Sutherland and former Senator Rawlins will both resume re-sume their law practice here. |
