Show iiayes' ap:c:;;o:;t is a ror-ULAR o;;e President Roosevelt's nomination cf Judge Arthur B. Hayes of Ogden as Solicitor So-licitor of Internal Revenue was a pleasing surprise to his many friends both In Og-den Og-den and In Salt Lake. Mr. Iiayes was State's Attorney until his nomination to one of the moat desirable desir-able positions In the Treasury department was made. The position for which Cot. Iiayes was nominated is one of the most Influential In the Treasury department. It carries with It a salary of $XX) per annum, and will be one whose duties will be most eon-genial eon-genial to the abilities of the nominee. His influence in all of the executive departments depart-ments of the Government will be widespread, wide-spread, and he will come In close touch with the chiefs of all the departments. Col. Hayes was at one time slated for the position of Assistant Attornev-Oeneral for the Interior department. This slate was broken, and he was then scheduled for appointment as Assistant Secretary of the Interior, but the plans went wrong again. President Roosevelt tendered to Senator Kearos a few weeks ago, for CoL Hayes, the Assistant Attorney Generalship for the Ipartment of Justice. This carried with It a salary of $4000 per year. Col. Hayes accepted the position and left for Washington Tuesday to enter upon his new duties. He has not been Informed of the changre In the plans, and will no doubt be greatly surprised by his good fortune. His position posi-tion is one of great impostance. He will be in fact, Attorney-General of the Treasury Treas-ury department. His Decisions affecting Internal revenue and other affairs will be final. The place was vacated a few days since by Albert W. Wlshard. at one time United States District Attorney for Indiana. In-diana. The confirmation of President Roosevelt's Roose-velt's nomination, will have been com- fileted before Col. Hayes reaches Washington, Washi-ngton, and he will enter upon his new duties at once. - The position vacated by Col. Hayes, the District Attorneyship, is being largely sought by the politicians at Ogden. Some of the candidates who have been mentioned in connection with the position are John D. Murphy, George HaJverson and A. W. Agee. Bank Cage .la Closed. The last chapter in the famous Citizens' bank case was closed yesterday, when the court ordered that the funds In the hands of County Clerk Hoi lings worth and Trustee Trus-tee Sapp, amounting in all to about $6000, be distributed. The distribution will be made by the trustees proportionately on 1470 shares of stock. The case has been running through the District courts for the past eleven years. |
