Show Lack of Confidence. Carrol: D. Wright struck the nail, on the head ' when he said the prime factor of industrial discord was lack of confidence. It is unfortunate that laboring men and capitalists, capital-ists, men who are necessary to each other and whose . interests are served through co-operation, CANNOT APPLY ORDINARY BUSINESS PRINCIPLES TO THEIR RELATIONS. . Confidence is one of the main things in business. Without it there would be a panic and depression. MEN WHO DEAL WITH EACH OTHER HAVE CONFIDENCE IN EACH OTHER, AND IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES IT IS NOT MISPLACED. But let one man employ and another be em-ploved, em-ploved, and there is war. They become suspicious of each other. IN ATTEMPTING TO SETTLE THEIR DIFFERENCES THEY DO AND SAY THINGS . THAT TWO BUSINESS MEN WOULD NEVER DREAM OF DOING AND SAYING TO EACH OTHER. . As a result we have some unions that are arbitrary, arbi-trary, and some organizations like the Employers' association, the object of which is to crush out unions. :nv, those who own business enterprises are going to conduct them, and unions are going to continue to exist. They are both wasting their energy. en-ergy. If they would only have confidence in each other, they could get along without fighting and be ci far more benefit to each other and to the country. We are loth to believe that employers or unions are so bad as each would tell us of the other. They are human and of course selfish, but they are great forces and are making this country one.of the mightiest in the world. WITH SUCH MAGNIFICENT MAGNIFI-CENT OPPORTUNITIES, IT IS A PITY TO SEE . THEM WASTE TIME IN FIGHTING EACH OTHER, WHEN THEY SHOULD BE WORKING IN THE UTMOST n.VRMONY. It may be argued that human nature enters largelj' into the relations between capital and labor. It does, but the vagaries of human nature do not enter -into business affairs to so great an extent. Business is unsentimental and systematic. ANGER AND REVENGE HAVE NO PLACE IN IT. NEITHER SHOULD THEY HAVE IN THE INDUSTRIAL IN-DUSTRIAL SITUATION. 1 |
