Smith, daughter of the late Mai -Gen-Burke, and a niece of President Zachary Taylor, Is dead at her home here from heart disease. Her husband, formerly a leading member of the bar, has been 111 In a sanitarium, and newi of Mrs. Smith's death phocked him so greatly that his death also is expected to occur. Mm Smith was born 71 years ago In old Fort Moultrie, at Charleston, S. C. where her father was then stationed. In her youth she was a great social favorite favor-ite in Washington and New York. An Increase in the deficiency of'92.J per cent over the previous year is shown by the financial statement for the postal service, incorporated incor-porated In the annual report of E. C Madden, Third Assistant Postmaster-General, Postmaster-General, for the fiscal year ending June SO, 1904. The report shows, however, that the increase In expenditure is on account ac-count of the rural free delivery service. Were it not for this extraordinary expenditure, ex-penditure, the postal service now would be about self-sustaining.
