By the . sale of the McCall tract it became - known that Mrs. Becker, wife of a dealer in furs, owned one-fifth of the property. . Not only did the searching of the title ti-tle result in turning over to Mrs. Becker $290,000, but it realized for the owners of the tract, the New York and Presbyterian - hospital, Columbia university, uni-versity, the Society for the Prevention of . Crime, of which the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Parkhurst Is president, and the board of home missions of the Presbyterian church many more thousands thou-sands of dollars than If the property had been sold some years ago. Up to two years ago it was thought that the 2ve- institutions each owned one-fifth lnterefct in the property. At that time it was agreed that the tract should be sold. The transaction was delayed until recently while the Investigation Inves-tigation of old deeds proceeded. This finally resulted in the discovery that fcfrs. Becker, whose father years ago held a one-flfth interest in the property, prop-erty, had a deed drawn transferring that Interest to his wife. The deed was placed In a strong box and remained re-mained long forgotten. Through the series of transfers found on the county records its absence was noticed and the fortunate woman located. |
