MINE IS ON FIRE One Hundred Men Make Escapcby Means Of a Second Shaft. PEORIA. . HI.. Dec. 9. The SchoU mine at South Bartonville. one mile south of this cltyj was discovered to be on fire in the main entry at the foot of the shaft this morning. -There were 100 men at work at the time, and for a while great excitement existed. The men, however, were taken to a second shaft & half mile distant and all made their escape, some of them being overcome over-come by smoke and gas. The origin of the fire la a mystery, but It la supposed to have started1 by the lamp of the trapper boy. Bight mules were overcome by the smoke, and the coal Is now on Are. The fire communicated to the woodwork wood-work of the shaft and worked both ways from Ks -starting place, upward through the shaft and toward the 'interior 'in-terior of the mine. The property loss will be heavy.
